No. 75 Colorado Falls to No. 31 Arizona State On Senior Day

April 14, 2024 | Tennis

BOULDER – After celebrating Senior Day for Alexandra Abyasova and Elys Ventura in their final home matches as Buffs, the No. 75 Colorado Buffaloes tennis team fell to No. 31 Arizona State 4-0 at the CU South Tennis Complex Sunday afternoon.

In what has been a rough stretch for Colorado (12-8, 1-7), they faced another tough opponent in Arizona State (13-8, 5-4). The Sun Devils got off to a hot start taking the doubles point and the early lead.

Singles brought some energy from a first-set tiebreaker won by Ventura at No. 2 singles and a tough second-set win by Abyasova at No. 5 singles. But overall, too many Buffs put themselves in situations that made it difficult to come back from.

"Doubles was tough today," head coach Anthony Pham said. "ASU did a good job. They were the more aggressive team today. We fought back. In doubles, we just dug too big of a hole unfortunately especially when you play a good team. In singles, I saw the fight there, but again, when you dig yourself a hole against a good team it is tough to get out from that."

Even in the loss, there was a celebration of both Abyasova and Ventura. For Abyasova even though she only was here for a semester she won her first six matches and made an impact on the team that will go further than this season.

Ventura has racked up 60 wins so far in her Colorado career including 29 doubles wins which is good for eighth all-time in CU history for a duo.

With the last home match in the books, Coach Pham knows it takes more than just the players to make matches a success, "I want to thank everyone for what they have done this season. From sports medicine, operations, marketing, sports information, administration, and of course the fans who come out and support. We thank every one of you and look forward to seeing you at home next season."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Arizona State won the first match of the day in doubles behind a 6-1 victory from Hanford and Piestrzynska over Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson at No. 3 doubles.
  • After battling early at No. 2 doubles Mila Stanojevic and Ventura fell to Morlet and Svetac 6-3 giving the Sun Devils a 1-0 lead early.
  • Aya El Sayed and Pia Rebec's match was left unfinished at No. 1 doubles after the point was clinched.
  • Sara Svetac won the first singles match against Betina Tokac at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-3 to give ASU a 2-0 lead.
  • At No. 1 singles No. 75, Giulia Morlet took down El Sayed 6-3, 6-4. El Sayed took a 4-1 lead early in the second set but was unable to hold on.
  • After going down 5-3 in the first set at No. 3 singles Stanojevic would win the next three games to take a 6-5 lead over No. 100 Emilija Tverijonaite. However, Tverijonaite would win the following game and outpace Stanojevic in the tiebreaker to win the first set 7-6(3). In the second set, the ball went the Sun Devil's way leading to a match-clinching 6-1 victory.
  • Both seniors Abyasova and Ventura were about to start their third set when the match was clinched. For Abyasova she came back to win the second set 7-5 after dropping the first 6-3.
  • The last match at No. 6 singles was in a second set tiebreaker when the match was clinched between Bubalo and Arizona State's Patricija Spaka.
UP NEXT
The Buffs will finish up the regular season next week on the road against Utah on Saturday, April 20 at Noon.

"We've had a tough stretch, but overall, this year's had a lot of positive things, a lot of growth," Pham said on the final regular season match against Utah. We have to keep things in perspective. You go through highs and lows, peaks and valleys. It's about being able to get back to doing what we did well and clean a lot of things up but we got one more opportunity and we're going to try to make the most of it."
