Former Buff guard joins coaching staff

BOULDER — Colorado women's basketball head coach JR Payne announced the homecoming of Bianca Smith on Friday as the Buffaloes' newest assistant coach.

A native of Missouri City, Texas, Smith played for the Buffs from 2005 to 2010. While in Boulder, she became a lethal sharpshooter, setting the individual season (82) and career record (257) for 3-pointers. Both records remained intact up until last season when Frida Formann tied her 2009-10 season output of 82 3s and, in the process, set the new career record by three. Smith also tied the single-game record with seven makes from deep on three different occasions.

Smith closed her career as a four-time letter winner and was the 2010 Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year. She redshirted her first season and amassed 1,138 career points in four years. Smith ranks eighth in program history with a career 36.4 3-point field goal percentage. She's also sixth all-time from the free-throw line, hitting a career 82.9 percent. Smith scored in double figures 52 times. She closed her career averaging 9.3 points, 1.2 assists, and 2.5 rebounds in 123 games.

"We are really excited to hire Bianca and bring one of our great Buffs back to Boulder where she can impact young women in the same way that her life was impacted here as a student-athlete," Payne expressed. "Bianca has had a tremendous amount of success as a player and coach and her passion for all things Colorado will be great for our program."

Smith joins the Buffs' staff, having spent the last four seasons at Lamar University. She helped guide Lamar to back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2022-23 and 2023-24 and an appearance in the 2023 Southland Conference Tournament championship game. She was promoted to associate head coach after the 2022-23 season.

Prior to Lamar, Smith coached four seasons at Loyola Chicago, helping the Ramblers to their first winning season since 2011-12. Smith also served as the director of basketball operations at Pittsburg during the 2015-16 season.

Smith spent three seasons at Rice (2012-15), joining the Owls as a video coordinator before being promoted to assistant coach in her second season. She then spent the 2011-12 season as a graduate assistant at Texas Southern.

Smith graduated from CU in 2010 with a sociology degree. She then played one season professionally with Utena in the Lithuanian Women's Basketball League.
