Edwards Announced '24-25 Men's Golf Schedule

Return to the Big 12 highlights several new events among traditional ones

BOULDER — University of Colorado men's head golf coach Roy Edwards announced the team's 2024-25 schedule Thursday, and with the Buffaloes returning to membership in the Big 12 Conference, it has a different look yet still maintains some familiar annual tournaments.

Edwards is entering his 19th season at the reins of the Buffalo program, with this team one of his most veteran of all his squads.  It features a 10-man roster that consists of five seniors, one junior, two sophomores and two incoming freshmen, with eight returning lettermen in all.

"We are really pleased with the schedule, and once again play one of the most competitive in the country," Edwards said. "We have a nice blend of regional events with some of the best national events in college golf.  The team will be well-positioned and conditioned for the stretch run in late spring.  The guys have been working very hard all summer and have been highly-competitive.  As we continue to work hard, compete, and believe in ourselves we expect a great season."

The season gets underway on Sept. 10-11 in Washington State's Palouse Collegiate in Pullman, the first time CU will participate in their former Pac-12 Conference rival's event.  It's one of four tournaments in the Pacific Time Zone that Colorado will play in, the fewest in several years due to the return to the Big 12 from the Pac-12.

The Buffs then play on the Front Range for the next three tournaments, beginning with Colorado State's Ram Masters Invitational at Fort Collins Country Club (Sept. 17-18), the New Mexico William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque (Sept. 20-21) for the 68th time and CU's own Mark Simpson-Colorado Invitational (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) at Colorado National Golf Club in Erie.  The Buffaloes have won their own meet eight times in the 13 years of its existence, with consecutive runner-up finishes the last two seasons, falling by one stroke to Wyoming in 2022 and by two shots to San Francisco last year.   The seniors have never won it and are looking to go out on a high note with a win in their own signature event; Justin Biwer finished second last October and third the year before to lead the Buffaloes.

CU then will head to Houston for the Big 12 Conference Match Play (Oct. 7-9), as 15 of the 16 schools will duke it out at the Golf Club at Houston Oaks in nearby Hockley; Arizona had a previous commitment and will not participate this year.  The Buffs then close out the fall portion of its schedule in Hawaii's Ka'anapali Classic (Nov. 2-4), where the Buffs have wrapped up their previous three fall campaigns.

Colorado will open the spring season in The Prestige at PGA West (Feb. 17-19), a tournament that former CU head coach, the late Mark Simpson, help create back in 2000-01; this will be the 12th time the Buffaloes will play in it.  Next up will be the Lamkin San Diego Classic (March (10-11) at San Diego Country Club and will close the month in Stanford's "The Goodwin" in Palo Alto (March 27-29), the 27th time the Buffaloes are entered in the tourney.

Edwards will bring the Buffaloes back to where he once coached to open April, as CU will play in Vanderbilt's Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn., for the first time (April 4-6).  The final tune-up ahead of the league meet will be Arizona State's Thunderbird Intercollegiate (April 10-11), a tournament CU has played in on and off 16 times since 1973.  The Big 12 Conference Championship closes out the regular season (April 22-24), set for Tulsa's Southern Hills Country Club.

"In addition to being an overall premier athletic conference, the Big 12 is one of the best golf conferences in the country, currently boasting four of the top 12 players in the World Amateur Golf Ranking," Edwards said.  "As a program, we will have to raise our game at every level going forward, which is exciting for all involved.  The move to the Big 12 was a wonderful decision by our university leadership and shows that CU is incredibly serious about competing at the highest level of college athletics."

The NCAA Regionals are set for May 12-14 at six different sites: Amherst, Va. (hosted by Virginia Tech); Tallahassee, Fla. (Florida State); Reno, Nev. (U. of Nevada); Bremerton, Wash. (U. of Washington) and two sites to be determined.  Those six regionals will each send five teams on to the NCAA Championship Finals, which are set for May 23-28 in Carlsbad, Calif., where the University of Texas will host the event at La Costa Golf Club.  After four days of stroke play, the champion is then determined in a match play format with the top eight teams advancing.

Individuals who are not on the travel squad or who rotate in-and-out will also play in some select other tournaments as long as they are within their competition day maximums to do so.
