The duo is the highest ranked players in Colorado history.
BOULDER – With the first day of practice for the 2024-25 season set to begin next week for the Colorado Buffaloes tennis team, preseason rankings came out and Aya El Sayed and Pia Rebec were ranked the No. 8 doubles team in the country according to ITA.
The pairing of El Sayed and Rebec is the highest ranked players in Colorado history in either doubles or singles. The next highest was Kathleen Cummings who was ranked No. 9 in singles in 1981-82.Â
For doubles rankings the next highest was the duo of Marshall and Myers in 1988-89 which was also the last doubles team to be ranked in the preseason rankings.
El Sayed and Rebec played their first season together last season in El Sayed's junior and Rebec's freshman campaign. They saw success early going 6-1 in fall tournaments which led into the spring season. Between the end of the fall and the start of the spring they won six straight matches.
Once the spring began and the competition moved to dual matches the pairing competed at the No. 1 spot the entire season going against the best the country had to offer in the Pac-12 facing off against nine ranked teams. The highlight of the season for the duo was defeating No. 14 ranked team from USC at home 6-4. The other ranked win came against Washington's Jacobs and Olsen who ranked No. 55 at the time.
With the success that came, El Sayed and Rebec were ranked five times throughout the season, the most since 2014-15. In the final rankings of last season, they came in at No. 55, now up 47 spots so far.Â
Other honors the two have acquired was ranked the No. 2 team in the Mountain Region.Â
The Buffs will begin their season at the Battle in the Bay September 12-15.
