No. 21 Buffs Take Down Cyclones for Eighth Straight Win

September 22, 2024 | Soccer

Emerson Layne notches the game-winner

AMES, IOWA — The No. 21 Colorado Buffaloes soccer team defeated the Iowa State Cyclones by a score of 1-0 Sunday afternoon, extending the Buffs' winning streak to eight games.

Colorado (9-1-0, 3-0-0) broke the scoreless draw late in the second half, with a deep strike from Emerson Layne, the junior's first goal of the season. Laura Gouvin and Mallory Allen were credited with the assists.

"Mallory [Allen] had an amazing pass to me, and all I had to do was kind of just touch and shoot it, and it went in," Layne said postgame.

Sunday was the first conference matchup against Iowa State since 2010, and now marks the fifth straight win in the series against the Cyclones. Colorado owns a 15-2-1 record against the Cyclones.

"Like I've said before, any win on the road, especially conference play, is a big win," head coach Danny Sanchez stated. "I told the team at halftime that the goal would probably come from a scrappy second ball, and I couldn't have been more wrong. A great ball from Lauren to Mal and Mal finds Emerson. It was a great turn and a great finish. Once again, we would like to have gotten the second goal to relax a little bit at the end."

Despite no goals scored in the first half of the game, the Buffaloes rattled off 17 shots, including eight of them on goal. Juliauna Hayward, Jace Holley, and Phoenix Dawn Miranda all recorded three shots for CU. Iowa State managed to just get one shot off in the first 45 minutes of play.

It was an exceptional effort from the CU defense, holding Iowa State to just four total shots, including not a single shot on goal. It was the first time a CU opponent did not get a shot on target since Oregon failed to do so on Oct. 9, 2022.

The Buffs tallied 24 shots of their own, including eight players with a multi-shot game.

"Over the 90 minutes, I'm going to give a lot of credit to the backs," Sanchez said. "Everyone that played in the back to not give up a shot on goal. I don't know the last time we've had a stat like that. So, it was a very good performance from the Buffs, and we're excited to get back home next weekend."

UP NEXT
The Buffaloes will return this next weekend and take on the Baylor Bears Thursday night at Prentup Field.
