Colorado blanks ASU in the lone match of the week
BOULDER — The No. 24 Colorado soccer team returned home and secured a shutout 2-0 victory over Arizona State on Friday at Prentup Field. The Buffaloes' clean sheet was the fifth of the season.
The win for the Buffs marks the 10th of the season, improving to 10-2-2 and 4-1-1 in Big 12 play. Colorado has now won 10 games in each of the last three seasons. It's the first time CU has back-to-back-to-back 10-win seasons since doing so four straight seasons from 2016-19, and the ninth time in 14 seasons under head coach Danny Sanchez.
"You have to get wins at home," Sanchez said following the wins. "Arizona State's having a great season. It was a really good performance by the Buffs tonight."
The Buffaloes dominated offensively with 27 shots, 11 of which were on target. Jordan Nytes recorded six saves to secure the shutout. Reagan Kotschau notched her fourth goal of the season, heading home the game-winner. Caley Swierenga provided the assist, her seventh of the year. Jace Holley scored her 10th goal of the season to add some insurance in the second half.
"Nothing cheap about those goals," Sanchez expressed. "You know, a great service from Cayle and Reagan is great in the air. She scored that diving header earlier [this season], and that was a classy finish there. The game started to get a little stretched, so we had to find that second goal and what a nice pass from Maddie and a cool, calm finish from Jace."
How it happened
The first half began with the Buffs establishing offensive momentum early, as Emerson Layne fired two shots within the first five minutes. Despite multiple attempts, Arizona State's goalkeeper, Pauline Nelles, kept the score level with five first-half saves, notably stopping back-to-back shots from Layne and Ava Priest from inside the six-yard box.
Colorado maintained pressure throughout the half, leading to a breakthrough in the 39th minute when Kotschau scored with a diving header on a set-piece serve from Swierenga. Nytes handled all three shots on goal to maintain the 1-0 lead at the half.
"I think it was really important [to score first]," Kotschau noted. "Especially going into the second half. That goal really got us excited and gave us energy once the second half started."
The second half began with the Buffs maintaining offensive pressure early on, highlighted by a series of shots from Priest and Leyba. Despite Arizona State's attempts to break through, goalkeeper Nytes made three more saves to keep Colorado in control.
"I think it [the defense] was great," Kotschau added. "They didn't really get any chances. It was just really strong. We stayed connected and we just did really well."
As the half progressed, Colorado's persistence paid off when Holley found the net in the 78th minute on a through ball from Maddie Sharrer, extending the lead to 2-0. The team continued to press forward with multiple attempts on goal, solidifying their defensive hold and concluding the game with a 2-0 victory.
