Buffs Continue Strong Fall, Finishing Second At DU

October 05, 2025 | Women's Golf

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. – Colorado women's golf held on to a share of second place at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate to cap off a strong week as the final round wrapped up Sunday afternoon at the University of Denver Golf Course.

The Buffaloes shot 4-under-par in the final round to finish at 11-under, 853, marking the third-best 54-hole score on a par 72 course in team history, and fourth-best for any course setup. Colorado remained tied with Texas State, which equaled the Buffaloes' effort with a 4-under round.

Vanderbilt, ranked No. 7 in the latest MIZUNO WGCA rankings, ran away with the team title at 24-under after a 6-under final round.

The Buffaloes had three players finish in the top 15. Junior Maya McVey was Colorado's low-54 golfer, tying for fifth place at 5-under. Junior Carolyn Fuller tied for ninth overall at 2-under while sophomore Ellen O'Shaughnessy, playing as an individual, tied for 13th at 1-under.

"It's exciting to see this team playing at a high level," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "They actually felt like we left a lot out there, but when you take a step back and look at the results of taking a first (at the Ram Classic) and then a second and finding a way to get an under-par score together today, even when we didn't have our best stuff, to me it's exciting. I'm so proud and excited for what's to come."

Maintaining second place didn't come easy; in fact, the Buffaloes had to play a little catch-up to do it. Colorado once again struggled on the front nine of DU's home course, playing it at 3-over and falling into fourth place for a while behind Texas State and Xavier, which had a good start before fading at the end and tying Clemson for fifth.

As it did on Friday, Colorado rallied on the back with its four scoring golfers playing that side at 7-under, allowing the Buffaloes to leap over Xavier and catch back up with Texas State. Adding in Colorado's win at the Ram Classic, it's the first time since the Fall of 2017, the Buffaloes have finished in the top two in back-to-back tournaments.

McVey shot a 70 on Sunday to record her second-straight top-five finish. She was even through 15, with a pair of birdies and a pair of bogeys, before getting into the red for good with back-to-back birdies at the par-4 16th and the par-3 17th.

"What got me through the tournament was just being positive," McVey said. "After my success at the last tournament, I wanted to take a different approach and that was facing each shot with more optimism."

Third-year Buffalo Vanessa Ngo had the team's best single round of the day at 3-under, 69, which allowed her to jump into the top 20, finishing in a three-way tie for 17th at 1-over. Ngo, registering her second career round in the 60s, began at 1-over but hit her stride on the back, playing that side at 4-under. She made eagle at the par-4 14th, holing out from 140 yards out.

Freshman Teemapat Pateetin finished tied for 26th at 4-over after carding a 71 in the final round, her second under par round of the tournament. Freshman Brenna Higgins tied for 35th overall at 6-over.

O'Shaughnessy shot a 74 on Sunday to record her fourth career top 20 finish.

Vanderbilt's Elizabeth Rudisill took medalist honors at 10-under after shooting a 68 on Sunday, making birdie on the 54th hole to clinch the one-stroke win over teammate Ava Merrill and Texas State's Yvonne Chamness.

Colorado continues its fall season at another familiar spot, the Stanford Intercollegiate, Oct. 17-19, at the Stanford Golf Course.
