Buffs Bounce Back, Sweep Lobos in Albuquerque

February 08, 2025 | Tennis

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Colorado bounced back on the road at the McKinnon Family Tennis Center Saturday morning, as the Buffaloes swept New Mexico 4-0.

After quickly taking the doubles point, Colorado (5-1) raced to the finish to see who could clinch the match against New Mexico (2-4).

In the shortest match of the season, the Buffs saw the back end of the lineup take center stage. In doubles, Aya El Sayed and Pia Rebec at No. 2 doubles and Lera Alexin and Mila Stanojevic at No. 3 doubles got Colorado on the board.

With an early lead, Colorado continued the hot start in singles with four spots, winning the first set and setting up a photo finish. Ema Bubalo claimed the opening singles win at No. 5 singles 6-3, 6-1, improving to 12-3 on the season and 4-1 in the spring.

With Alexin, Stanojevic, and Betina Tokac needing just one more game to clinch their match, Tokac extended the lead to 3-0 in her sixth win of the season. With a 6-4, 6-3 victory at
No. 4 singles, Tokac earned her fifth straight set win of the season, and her 50th singles win of her career.

Closing in on a team victory, Alexin, at No. 6 singles, brought it home. After winning 6-0, 6-4, she clinched her first win as a Buff.

This marked the 21st straight regular-season win over non-Power Five teams dating back to 2023.

"Our team did a good job today of adjusting to the conditions and finding a way to get the job done," head coach Anthony Pham said. "We competed well and did a good job of problem-solving on the courts. That's the beauty of our team; when one or two of us don't have on a particular day, they pick each other up and fight for each other."

HOW IT HAPPENED
El Sayed and Rebec got the Buffs off to a fast start at No. 2 doubles, winning their first match of the spring 6-3 over Sofia Taborga and Maud Vandeputte.

Needing one more to clinch the doubles point, Alexin and Stanojevic claimed a 6-3 win of their own at No. 3 doubles against Maria Matsoukatidi and Sarah O'Connor, giving Colorado a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

With the doubles point clinched, Bubalo and Anya Nelson's match against Rebekkah Gaines and Maria Sodre at No. 1 doubles was unfinished at 5-2 in favor of the Lobos.

Bubalo got singles going with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 5 position against Sodre to extend the lead to 2-0 early.
Soon after, Tokac added another win at No. 4 singles against Matsoukatidi 6-4, 6-3. She improved to 6-0 on the season, the only Buff with six wins.

Needing only one more to clinch the match, Alexin came to the rescue at No. 6 singles against Taborga. She took the first set 6-0 for the second straight match and, this time, finished the deal 6-4 in the second set.

Stanojevic, at the top spot, was minutes away from clinching herself after taking the first set 6-0 and was tied in the second set 5-5 against Gaines when the match was finished.

El Sayed and Rixt van der Werff attempted comebacks after dropping the first set when the match was finished leaving both of their matches unfinished in the second sets.

UP NEXT
The Buffs will have next week off before traveling to Las Vegas to play two matches against UNLV and Penn State. They will take the court against the Rebels on Feb. 21 and the Nittany Lions on Feb. 22, both at 9 a.m.
