Golfers Slip Into Fifth But Remain In Contention In "The Goodwin"

March 28, 2025 | Men's Golf

Holland, Swanson Pace Buffaloes In Second Round

PALO ALTO, Calif. — The 32nd-ranked University of Colorado men's golf team more or less hung on here Friday, not playing its best but are still very much in contention after slipping from a tie for first into fifth place after two rounds of action in Stanford's "The Goodwin."

No. 15 UCLA used the best team round of the day – an 8-under 272, to vault into a tie atop the standings with No. 33 SMU, as both have 5-under par 555 scores.  No. 53 Santa Clara moved up a spot into third (3-under 557), while No. 34 Northwestern snuck into fourth (2-under 558) ahead of the Buffaloes, who have an even-par 560 score.  No. 31 BYU, tied with CU after 18 holes, dropped into sixth (561), and No. 13 Utah, one back of the pair entering Friday, fell from third to seventh (563).

It was just Colorado's second team round that was over par out of 23 this season, albeit not by much; the 5-over effort was still the ninth-best in the 30-team field Friday.  Still, it snapped a streak of 17 straight team rounds of par or better (and 119-under par), by far the school record, blowing past the old mark of 12 set during the 2013-14 season (CU was a net 69-under par in that streak).

Junior Hunter Swanson continued to pace the Buffalo attack, following up a 3-under 67 with an even-par effort on the 6,742-yard, par-70 Stanford Golf Course design, for which his 3-under 137 total is tied for fifth and just three off the lead.  But he had to rally to get back down to even as he opened with a triple-bogey on the 430-yard, par-4 10th hole, and then went birdie-bogey-bogey to rise to 4-over just four holes in.  After scoring par on No. 14, he scored back-to-back birdies on the 363-yard, par-4 15th and on the 505-yard, par-5 16th.  He then made birdies on Nos. 1 and 8 on the front side to pull even.  He had a team-high five birdies (now with 12 over two rounds, also the most in the 163-player field), and had 10 pars as he played the last 14 holes at 4-under.  Overall, he's played the par-5's over the two days at 5-under, is even on the par-3's and 2-over on the par-4's.

Sophomore Ty Holbrook, fighting some mild effects from a cold, fired a 4-over 74 and is tied for 37th with a 2-over 142 total, dropping 28 spots in the standings.  He was doing a decent job of hanging in there, after going birdie-bogey on Nos. 16 and 17 k, he parred the next six holes.  But down the stretch, he bogeyed three of his last four holes.  He had just the lone bogey with 12 pars opposite five bogeys for his round, though remains the only Buff not to score worse than a bogey through 36 holes.

Senior Justin Biwer is also tied for 37th after firing a 3-over 73 – which equaled his high score all year – that also has him going into Saturday with a 2-over 142 score.  He opened with a birdie on each nine, with eight pars in-between, but then wound up on the unhappy side of par the rest of the way – a most uncharacteristic finish for him with three bogeys in a four hole stretch and then a double on the 186-yard, par-3 8th.  He has five birdies and a team-best 25 pars through two rounds.

Senior Dylan McDermott is tied for 53rd after posting a 3-over 73 for a 4-over 144; with a 1-over 71 to open here, it marked the first time this year he had back-to-back rounds over par, and just the 11th time in 42 tournaments.  His rare struggles here can be traced to a wrist injury he suffered 11 holes into the event on Thursday that needed some mild attention from a Stanford trainer; and like Holbrook, he's also battling a cold.   He opened with a double bogey on the par-4 10th, then went par-bogey-par-bogey to stand 4-over after just five holes; to his credit, from that point on he played the last 13 holes of his round at 1-under, finishing with two birdies and 12 pars with just one more bogey the rest of the way.  Like Biwer, the 73 matched his high score for the season.

Senior Jack Holland rallied from some first round struggles (a 7-over 77) to card a 1-under 69 that his him at 6-over 146 entering Saturday; he was the fifth-biggest mover Friday, rising up 63 spots in the standings into a tie for 74th.  He had three birdies and 13 pars Friday, with just two bogeys, after he had seven holes worse than par in his first time around Stanford's track.  Though he opened with a bogey on No. 10, he came right back with a birdie on No. 11 and closed his round with a bird on No. 9.  He played the par-4 holes the best of any Buff in round two (even), and was also even on the par-5's and 1-under on the par-3's.  His 69 matched his best score as a senior, which he has now recorded on three occasions.

"We had some really good comebacks by Dutchy (Holland) from yesterday and today from Hunter after how he started the round," head coach Roy Edwards said.  "Those were very good rounds that can't be overstated.  It seemed like we just labored through the day to do much else.  For the most part, the effort was good and we are still for sure in a good spot going into the final round.

"Dylan and Justin are always really good and today was just a 'one-off' I am sure," he added.  "We will need to depend on them big-time tomorrow."

UCLA senior Omar Morales, the first round leader, now shares the top spot with Santa Clara sophomore, as both are in through two rounds with 8-under par 134 scores.  Two others are one stroke back, and there are 19 players within five strokes of medalist honors entering Saturday's third and final round.

At present, the Buffaloes will tee off on No. 1 beginning at 1:00 p.m. MDT, and will be paired with BYU for a third straight day, but this time joined by Utah and No. 22 Pepperdine.  The final group – the four top teams – won't tee off until 2:48 p.m. MDT (sunset is at 8:29 p.m.).  But with play racing against sunset, at press time it wasn't known if tournament officials would be adjusting the tee times or the format.

NOTES: For the second straight day, light rain fell on and off at different times during the morning when CU played, never warming to more than 57 degrees with winds usually around 5-6 miles per hour … CSU's Christoph Bleier and Northwestern's Ethan Tseng were the day's biggest movers, jumping 72 spots from 125th into 53rd with 2-under 68's … McDermott still owns the team's best second (middle) round average despite the 73, as it's a solid 68.5 (Swanson is next at 70.0, followed by Biwer at 70.5) … There are 18 teams in the top 61 in the latest rankings competing here, the deepest field CU has competing as well (along with 30 of the nation's top 150 ranked players) … The average score for 326 rounds after 36 holes is 73.30 (it was 73.01 for the first round and 73.60 for the second); there are 21 players under par (down from 29) and another four in at even-par (down from 18) entering the final round … The Buffaloes have combined for 34 birdies (tied for fifth-best in the field, but had just 13 Friday after a tournament-best 21 in the opening round; Pepperdine and TCU lead with 37), and 109 pars (tied for sixth; UCLA leads with 120); CU has the fourth-fewest bogeys (31; UCLA has the low – 27) and six doubles or higher (tied for seventh-fewest) … Through two rounds, Colorado is playing the par-3's at 6-over (sixth-best in the field), the par-4's at 16-over (tied for fourth) and the par-5's at 11-under (tied for 10th) … Biwer's two birdies Friday enabled him to break a tie with Jeremy Paul (2013-17) for the most in CU history with 488; McDermott is inching closer to Paul, as he is third with 464 … The event is named for the late Wally Goodwin, who coached the Cardinal from 1987 through 2000 and led them to the 1994 NCAA title; after taking three seasons off, he returned as the head coach at Northern Colorado to help elevate the Bears to Division I status before retiring for good in 2007 … This is the 27th time Colorado has played in the event dating back to the 1980-81 season; it was called three different names before "The Goodwin" and was originally played in the fall (when Colorado won it in 1992) … CU was paired with BYU, No. 27 Long Beach State and No. 30 Georgia the first two rounds.
