Fixes on the Way for Buffs

BOULDER — Colorado head coach Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders isn't surprised by much these days when it comes to what he's seen on the football field. The Pro Football Hall of Famer and two-time Super Bowl champ has lived all the ups and downs as a player and now coach.

But following Friday night's loss at Houston, Coach Prime was taken aback, calling the Buffaloes' performance "not good at all," and then proceeded to take all the responsibility for the "foolishness that went on out there."

Colorado (1-2, 0-1 Big 12) began its preparation for this week's matchup against Wyoming as soon as the team touched down back in Boulder early hours of Saturday morning and practiced the next day on Sunday.

What was scheduled as a routine, non-padded practice that normally follows a game was turned into a padded practice initiated by the players themselves, giving Coach Prime a bit of a prideful surprise.

"Usually, if you play 60-70% of the plays [in the game] you come out to practice dressed, but you don't have to work," Coach Prime explained of the standard operating procedure. "The whole defense came out there [to practice], padded up, and I said, 'Wow.' I said, 'Why do you guys wear your pads?' They said, 'Because we didn't feel like we played well. We got to work.' I think everybody, but maybe two or three players on offense, were padded up. It's kind of the same sentiment.

"I'm proud of the resilience," Coach Prime continued. "I'm proud of the way they responded. Usually, the first days of the week are horrendous practices. They worked their butts off today [Tuesday]. They really did."

With the Buffs having two different starting quarterbacks and having played three different QBs this season, there has been some chatter surrounding the program's identity.

"You don't want to say what things should be," Coach Prime jabbed a little. "That gets you upset when you walk out of here – what things should be. I should probably be five pounds heavier right now. But I had the little setbacks. We're getting there. We're going to get there maybe Saturday, maybe a couple games after that. But we're going to get there with the consistency that we desire. I can see it."

The way Prime sees it, the team's identity and the ability to put up wins are not exclusively intertwined. When pressed on which comes first, identity for winning, on Tuesday, the answer was straightforward.

"Winning," Coach Prime stated. "First of all, I don't know coaches who seek identity. I think coaches seek wins. You call it what you want. It looks the way it looks. I don't care what kind of car we pull up in, as long as we pull out of here with a W."

Coach Prime, a self-proclaimed "inpatient man," recognizes the struggles the Buffaloes have displayed early on this season and sympathizes with Buff Nation, saying, "I'm just as upset with some of you [when you're] watching on TV, or you're there. I'm just as upset, or even more."

But every problem has a solution, and for the Buffs, that starts at the top with Coach Prime.

"I'm a fixer," Prime emphasized. "I want to fix the problems…We have the young men inside that locker room and the coaching staff to get it together."
