BOULDER – The Colorado women's basketball team topped Adams State 100-39 in an exhibition game at the CU Events Center Monday night.
CU saw a dominant win in their first meeting against Adams State since November 23, 1985. Colorado led for all but 30 seconds and saw 38 of their points come from off the bench.
The balanced effort from the Buffs saw 12 different players score on the night. Sophomore guard Mecailin Marshall led all players with 20 points in her first game in the black and gold.
Sophomore forward Logyn Greer ended the night with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Graduate center Anete Adler and freshman guard Cail Jahnke each chipped in 15 points while sophomore forward Kira Reynolds pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
"In an exhibition game really, you're just trying to sort of get loose and see what works and what doesn't work," head coach JR Payne said. "We played with lots of different combinations of rotations and people in different spots, and so I'm really proud of how hard we played. I think even through different lineups, our effort was really, really good, and that's something that obviously has been a hallmark of our program."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Marshall opened the scoring for the Buffaloes with two baskets and a free throw, as Colorado jumped out to a 7-3 lead. The Lubbock, Texas native finished out the quarter with 15 points to give CU a 26-10 advantage after the first 10 minutes.
The Buffs continued to set the tone in the second quarter, outscoring the Grizzlies 19-9. Colorado concluded the first half with a 9-0 run, capped off with a second-chance bucket from sophomore forward Sophie Zadel as time expired to give CU a 45-21 lead at the half.
Colorado's defense was on full display to begin the second half as the Buffs held Adams State scoreless for the first four minutes. Adler came alive after the break, scoring 11 of CU's 27 third-quarter points. The Buffs allowed just six points from the Grizzlies in the third frame.
Jahnke found her rhythm in the fourth quarter, shooting 3-for-3 from the floor and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. CU ended the game with a 20-2 run in the final five minutes of the game.
