Hunter Swanson vaults into a tie for eighth
LA QUINTA, Calif. – The University of Colorado men's golf team returned closer to its fall form here Tuesday, knocking 16 shots off its team score from Monday to move into 16th place after two rounds of the 26th Annual "The Prestige at PGA West."
No. 35 and co-host Stanford assumed the lead with a 5-under 563 team score, edging No. 9 Texas Tech (566) and first round leader, No. 91 Oregon State (567) as the trio are the only schools under par. No. 77 Oregon is in fourth (1-over 569) with No. 47 Kansas holding down fifth (573) to round out the top five.
Only four teams recorded subpar team scores in the second round, with three others equaling par; CU's 3-over 287 was the eighth-best in the 24-team field. The Buffs were able to jump from 21st into 16th and position themselves for a possible top 10 finish.
Senior Hunter Swanson continued to play the best for the Buffaloes, and after carding a 2-under 69, he moved up 23 spots into a tie for eighth place with a 1-under 141 total. He had four birdies and 12 pars with two bogeys Tuesday on the 7,105-yard, par-71 PGA West Greg Norman Course; with six birdies, 25 pars and five bogeys through two rounds, he is one of just 22 players in the 120-man field to not have scored at least one double bogey or worse. He finished his round with nine straight holes of par or better (two birdies) in shooting a 33 on the front side. He has played the par-3's at 1-under, tied for third-best overall, and is also 1-under on the par-5's and 1-over on the par-4's. His 69 was just one of 11 scores in the 60's on Tuesday.
Junior Brandon Knight shot a 1-over 72 to give him a 6-over 148 total, which vaulted him from 86th into a tie for 55th. He had a team-high six birdies Tuesday, to go with six pars, five bogeys and a double. He opened strong and was 3-under through eight holes, but went bogey-double on the turn (18th and 9th holes). He then made back-to-back birdies to get back into the red before bogeying three of his last five holes. His eight birdies over two days are tied for seventh in the field.
Junior Ty Holbrook is tied for 86th, improving 19 spots in the standings after carding a 2-over 73 for 10-over 152 total. He had a steadier round Tuesday with four birdies, eight pars and six bogeys, avoiding big numbers that ballooned his first round score. A couple of late bogeys on Nos. 7 and 8 prevented him from finishing with a par, but he got back on track with a birdie on a par-5, the 16th round out of 17 he has scored at least one on the par-5's in an event this season.
First-year graduate transfer Jackson Rivera is also tied for 86th after recording a second straight a 5-over 76 to get to 10-over 152. He had two birdies and 12 pars opposite three bogeys and a costly quadruple, which he made on the 181-yard, par-3 7th. He finished up bogey-par after also being position to score a par round.
Sophomore Parker Paxton rebounded from his first career score in the 80s with a 2-over 73, which has him tied for 94th with an 11-over 153. He had only one birdie but a team-high 14 pars with three bogeys the second time around the Norman track. As was the case with three of his peers, he also lost a couple of strokes down the stretch that cost him an even-par effort.
"'Most certainly was a better day," head coach Roy Edwards said. "Hunter had a nice round. Looking forward toward to tomorrow and if we can keep the momentum moving forward will shoot a good round and can move up the leaderboard."
Oregon's Aiden Krafft is in at 5-under 137 through 36 holes to own in the individual lead, good for a two-stroke lead over four players (from four different schools). The top five completely flipped from after the first round, as everyone slipped down 10 or more spots in the standings.
The third and final round is set for Wednesday; the Buffaloes will be paired with Kansas State and Lipscomb and will tee off on No. 10 beginning at 1:55 p.m. MST.
THE PRESTIGE INDIVIDUAL: Sophomore Michael Fang is also on the trip, competing in the companion "The Prestige Individual" at the Golf Club of Terra Lago in nearby Indio. He remained tied for 18th after a second consecutive 3-over 75 on the 7,060-yard, par 72 course design. He had four birdies and nine pars with three bogeys and two doubles, and now has six birdies and 20 pars through two rounds. He played the par-4's at 2 over, tied for 10th-best in the 52-man field, and has the 11th-most birdies. The average score for all 104 rounds is 76.38. Northwestern's Isaac Lee is the leader at 4-under 140 (one of just five subpar scores). Fang will tee off on No. 1 at 10:40 a.m. MST in Wednesday's third and final round and will be paired with UCLA's Alex Papayoanou and Yale's Preston Howe.
NOTES: Tuesday's high temperature was 65 degrees but unlike Monday, the weather was perfect throughout the day. But the rain that plagued Monday's afternoon round is in the forecast for Wednesday … The average score for all 240 rounds is 74.26 (a tad higher for the second round at 74.43; it was lower in the morning at 72.53 than in the afternoon, 76.13) … There are just 11 players under par through two rounds (with only four others even) … The eight-toughest holes Tuesday, in order, were Nos. 7, 18, 6, 2, 1, 13, 8 and 14: CU's four scorers played those at 7-over, while Stanford's played them the best a 1-over; Texas Tech's were 6-over … The five Buffs have played the par-5's even (tied for 12th; Stanford leads at 11-under), the par-3's at 12-over (tied for 13th; Oregon leads a 2-under) and the par-4's at 24-over (16th; Texas Tech topped all at 6-over) … Colorado has 26 birdies (tied for 9th; Texas Tech has the most with 39), along with 105 pars (14th; Wake Forest leads with 1245) with 40 bogeys (tied for the 14th-fewest; three have the low of 26) and nine doubles or worse (tied for 11th-fewest; Stanford has just two) … Swanson now has 38 rounds in the 60's (49 subpar) in 131 career rounds … Paxton had played 36 rounds in college before his first score in the 80's, one of the longer runs to open a CU career … Colorado has yet to record an eagle, something the Buffs had at least two of in each tournament in the fall … Stanford's Nathan Wang had the comeback of the day—after scoring a quintuple bogey on No. 1 (a 9), he was 6-over through three but rallied to shoot an even-par 71.
