Rivera Ties For 12th To Lead Buffaloes

CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The University of Colorado men's golf team never got much going and slipped two spots into a seventh place finish here Tuesday in the 19th annual San Diego R.E. Lamkin Invitational.

No. 51 and co-host University of San Diego held off Long Beach State for the team win, with the Toreros finishing with a 26-under par 838 team score; The Beach finished two back at 840 after leading after the first round.   BYU (847), St. Mary's (850) and co-host San Diego State (851) rounded out the top five.

The Buffs, in fifth place after two rounds, hung around in that spot in the early going, settled into six for much of the round and then slipped into seventh late, finishing with a 2-over 866 team score.  CU uncharacteristically had no player record a score of par or better for the second time this season, finishing with a 9-over 297 team total that bested just three teams in the 16-team field.

It was just the 14th time dating back to the '21-22 season that the Buffs didn't have at least one score of par or better in a team round, or 170 rounds in all.

First-year graduate transfer Jackson Rivera tied for 12th to lead the Buffaloes here, closing with a 1-over 73 that had him wind up with a 3-under 213 total.  He was off to a good start – 2-under through five – but a run of bogey-par-double bogey had his fall to 1-over; he battled back to be 1-under again through 14, but bogeys on Nos. 15 and 17 prevented him from finishing on the happy side of par for the day.   He had a team-high four birdies Tuesday for a team-best 13 overall, with 32 pars, eight bogeys and the one double.  His 13 birdies also tied for the sixth-most in the field, and over the three days, he played the eight toughest holes in the event at just 1-over par.  He played the par-5's the best of all the Buffaloes at 5-under, and was 1-over on the par-3's and par-4's.

Senior Hunter Swanson tied for 24th after closing with a 1-over 73, giving him a 1-over 217 overall after opening here with two even par 72's.   He opened the round with one of his three birdies on the 368-yard, par-4 1st hole, but bogeyed three of his next five holes.  After five straight pars, he went birdie-bogey-birdie to get back to 1-over before finishing with four pars, including on the 460-yard, par-4 18th the toughest hole in the round that played to +0.44 over par on the day.  He had eight birdies, a team-high 37 pars (tied for 11th in the field) and nine bogeys for the meet.

Sophomore Parker Paxton tied for 30th after fashioning a closing round of 2-over 74; after two even pars to open play like Swanson, he finished with a 2-over 218 total.  He also parred the tough 18th, matching Rivera's and Swanson's efforts on the hole as CU was one of just six teams to have three players avoid a bogey.  He had 11 birdies and 30 pars opposite 13 bogeys.  He was 3-under on the par-5's, 2-over on the par-4's and 3-over on the par-3's.

Junior Brandon Knight closed with a 5-over 77, as his 4-over 220 tied him for 38th.  His score inflated due to closing each nine with double bogeys; he otherwise was hanging in most of the day, as he was 2-over with four holes remaining until a bogey on No. 15 and the double on the 18th.  He had 10 birdies, 33 pars eight bogeys and three doubles overall, playing the par-5's the best at 4-under.

Junior Ty Holbrook had his struggles, finishing with a 6-over 78 and an 8-over 224 overall that placed him 65th overall.  He never could get much going, and was birdie-less for a rare time in his career.  He was 3-over par for each nine in his final round.  He had six birdies and 35 pars against 12 bogeys and a double for the week.

"It was just a tough day in general," head coach Roy Edwards said.  "We can't have multiple guys shoot over mid-70s. We did that today and went backwards. Jackson had a nice event overall and everyone had some good moments for the most part.  We will work on getting more consistent, and this team has always done a good job of regrouping and responding to the challenge.  I expect this to be no different."

BYU's Kihei Akina used a final round 8-under 64 to overtake Long Beach State's Alejandro De Castro for medalist honors.  Akina finished with a 14-under 202, edging DeCastro, who led after each of the first two rounds, by one stroke.

The Buffaloes will return to action next Monday, traveling to Tucson to participate in Arizona's Thunderbirds Intercollegiate at Tucson Country Club.

NOTES: Tuesday's temperature at the start of the day was 55 degrees, warming to 69, with no precipitation; the wind picked up a bit in the afternoon but wasn't overly a factor … Long Beach State changed its nickname to The Beach from the 49ers in 2019 … This was the eighth time the Buffs played in the event co-hosted by San Diego State University and the University of San Diego … The other round CU did not have a player record a subpar or even-par round was the first round of The Prestige at PGA West (CU had just two in 43 rounds last year) … The average score for all 286 rounds was 73.85 (CU's fiave averaged 72.8 for 15 rounds) … There were 21 players under par and two others finishing even …  Five holes played to +0.24 over par or higher for the event (in order, 9, 6, 18, 13 and 3); the Buffs had played those at 10-over for the first two rounds, but at 12-over on Tuesday … The five Buffs played the par-5's at 16-under (tied for fifth; St. Mary's was 29-under), the par-4s at 14-over (tied for sixth; BYU played those the best at 5-under) and the par-3's at 13-over (tied for eighth, LBSU topped at 7-over) … Colorado was sixth with 48 birdies (San Diego State has 58), along with 167 pars (seventh; Pacific lead with 184); CU's 49 bogeys were the ninth-fewest (LBSU had 34), and its five double bogeys tied for the sixth-fewest (UC San Diego and SDSU had just two) … After scoring 17 eagles in 15 rounds during the fall, the Buffs are still "eagle-less' through eight thus far this spring … CU has 19 subpar rounds out of 23 played this season, as Tuesday's was just the fourth over par (the school best of 29 subpar rounds was set last year, with 25 in 2017-18 the second-most) … Colorado was 9-6 here against Division I competition, giving it a season record of 106-31-2 (.770) for eight events; it finished 25-20 in single rounds here, now 285-90-19 (.747) on the season … Paxton and Swanson are now tied for the team lead in stroke average (70.30), with six players in all between 70.30 and 71.35 …  By going birdie-less, Holbrook did par all four par-5 holes, still owning an amazing command of those on the season:  out of 87 par-5 holes on the season, he has two eagles, 43 birdies, 37 pars and just five bogeys … Sixty miles to the north, two former Buffs are competing in the Asher Tour's Temecula Open: Justin Biwer is tied for 14th with a 2-under 68, with Tucker Clark tied for 56th with a 1-over 71; the leader is Canadian Jacob Pernutti, in at 8-under 62.
