Career at Colorado—Competed in 48 races in his career, finishing 43 of them with 13 top 15 finishes (11 in giant slalom and two in the slalom). He was presented with the Outstanding Career Award after his senior season.
2016 (Senior)–Closed out his career competing in all 12 races leading up to the NCAA Championships and finished every one of them. He was solid in giant slalom action, finishing in the top 15 in four of his six races there. He had a pair of 10th-place finishes in the GS, first at the RMISA Alpine Qualifiers held in Bozeman, Mont., and again later in the second Qualifier held in Steamboat Springs. He was 12th at the Colorado Invitational in the last meet in the month of January. Hi top slalom finish on the season came in the RMISA Championships, a 17th-placing showing.
2015 (Junior)—Competed in all 12 races leading up to the NCAA Championships, finishing in 10 of those. He posted five top 20 finishes on the year, his top mark being 13th place in the slalom at the Colorado Invitational. His top giant slalom finish as a junior was 14th in the RMISA Alpine Qualifiers at Park City, Utah. At the RMISA Championships, he finished 23rd in the slalom. Prior to the start of the college season, he had two top 16 finished in giant slalom action at Copper Mountain and finished 28th and 32nd in slalom races at the CU Invitational Jimmie Heuga Classic at Echo Mountain.
2014 (Sophomore)—Smith competed in all 12 races for the Buffaloes leading up to the NCAA Championships and was again solid on the giant slalom side while also showing improvement in slalom action. He had three top 10 finishes in six giant slalom races, including a seventh place at the RMISA Championships, where he also took eighth as a freshman. He was eighth in an RMISA Qualifier race at Winter Park as part of the CU Spencer Nelson Memorial Invitational and he was also tied for 10th in the GS at Montana State. In six slalom races, he finished five with one top 20, taking 19th at the RMISA Championships, where he had his career best finish of 10th as a freshman, and he was also 21st at the CU meet in Winter Park in slalom action. After the college season was over, he showed some impressive results in FIS races, taking home one podium and three top 10 finishes in giant slalom and he also had three straight top 10s in slalom action at Eldora and Mission Ridge, Wash. At the US National Championships in Squaw Valley, he finished 19th in the slalom and 34th in the GS race.
2013 (Freshman)—Smith competed in all 12 races for the Buffaloes leading up to the NCAA Championships, finishing 10 of them and coming up with five top 20 and four top 10 finishes, with three of those four top 10s coming in giant slalom races. After struggling a bit in his first collegiate meet at the Colorado Invitational, he settled down by the time the Denver Invitational came around, and he finished eighth in a GS Qualifier race and then sixth in a GS race as part of the DU meet. He closed out the his season with a bang, pulling in two top 10 performances at the RMISA Championships, finishing eighth in the GS race and his season best performance of 10th in the slalom race. He earned mention on the Division I National All-Academic Ski Team after attaining a 3.5 GPA and participating in the RMISA Championships. Prior to the start of his freshman season, he traveled to Italy to participate in World University Games, and in an extra race in Italy before leaving, he finished 14th in a slalom race. He also had one top 10 prior to WUG, an 18th place GS finish at Loveland. After the conclusion of the college season, had six top 10 finishes, five in GS action including podiums at Eldora (second) and Lusten, Minn. (third) before traveling to New Zealand where he had two top 10 finishes in GS including one podium (third) at Cardrona.
Club—He skied for Club Eldora while living in Boulder from 2006-08 and moved to Vermont where he took part in the Burke Mountain Academy. He has participated in FIS races since 2007 with 247 races of experience entering CU. He finished 205 of those races with 84 top 20, 44 top 10 and 19 top five performances. He has nine podium appearances with five race victories. His five wins consist of two giant slalom, two Super G and one Super Combined. His two biggest wins were in August 2012 at the Australian New Zealand Cup races, where he won Giant Slalom races on back-to-back days. One win was a 9 point penalty and the other a 12 point and his slalom points dipped from about 30 to 10. While there he also took eighth in a slalom race. In eight total Australian New Zealand Cup races, he has four top 10s and the two wins. He also has 37 North American Cup races under his belt with one top 20 finish. He has 15 National Championship races to his credit in Finland, Austria and the United States. He has fared well in the Austrian National Championships the last two years, finishing third in the giant slalom and fourth in the slalom in 2011 and third in the GS and second in the slalom in 2012.
High School—Smith graduated from Burke Mountain Academy in East Burke, Vt., in 2010 and along with skiing, he also lettered in soccer as a center midfielder. He was on the BMA honor roll twice in high school.
In the Classroom—Smith is majoring in Environmental Studies at Colorado.
Personal—Cameron Smith was born January 14, 1992, in Boston Mass., to Colin and Margaret Smith, and considers Boulder his hometown. He has a brother who rows at Cornell and he chose CU over Middlebury and Dartmouth. He chose CU because of the “great team spirit and location.”
