PAIR OF CU NETTERS ADVANCE AT CENTRAL REGIONALS
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - A trio of Colorado women’s tennis players won their opening round match at the five-day 2003 ITA Central Region Women’s Tennis Championships hosted by the University of Utah.
The tournament features over 120 participants in singles play and 56 doubles entries from 26 college teams across the region. The field includes competitors from Utah, Boise State, BYU, Utah State and Weber State; Mountain West Conference schools Colorado State, New Mexico and Wyoming; and other top teams such as Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Tulsa.
During today’s singles qualifying rounds, a trio of CU newcomers all won their opening round matches with Jenny Hanson, Kristy Randono and Martina Sedivec moving on in the qualifying bracket. Hanson defeated Tiffany Smith of Tulsa, 6-3, 6-3; Randono defeated Jelena Koprivica of Boise State, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0(8); and Sedivec ousted Nora Quintel of New Mexico, 6-1, 1-6, 1-0(7).
Hanson was the lone CU player of the three to play in the second round and lost in straight sets to Olga Boulytaveva of BYU, 6-0, 6-1.
Randono and Sedivec will play their second round match Wednesday afternoon.
In addition to the qualifying round, CU is also present in the main draw of 64 which begins on Thursday. Sophomore Jessica Vanderdys plays top-seeded Urska Juric of Missouri; junior Kendra Strandemo will be matched up with Vera Vasileva of Montana State; and senior Morgan Sall plays ninth-seeded Emily Kirchem of Colorado State.
A pair of CU doubles teams will also play in the Round of 64 main draw with Hanson and Vanderdys playing the host school Whitney Eber and Ashley J. Young of Utah; along with Sall and Strandemo playing a tandem from Arkansas, Megen Ferriera/Whitney Morton. Both matches are scheduled on Thursday.
The second and third days will feature main draw singles and doubles, and consolation rounds, starting at 8:30 a.m. The quarterfinals and semifinals of all draws will be played Saturday beginning at 9:00 a.m. The finals take place Sunday with the singles consolation at 9:00 a.m., singles championship at 10:30 a.m. and both the doubles consolation and championship at 1:00 p.m.
