CU PAIR REACH MOUNTAIN REGIONAL ROUND OF 16
LAS VEGAS, Nev. ? A pair of Colorado freshmen will be represented in the Round of 16 of the 2003 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the UNLV campus.
Peter Bjork and Marek Dvorak each won two matches on Thursday to advance to the Round of 16 of this 16-team western team event. Both singles finalists and the championship doubles team at 17 ITA Regional site advance to the 2003 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the University of Michigan on Nov. 6-9.
On Thursday, Bjork a freshman from Huddinge, Sweden, upset the No. 21st ranked player in the tournament, defeating Tomasz Grzyb of Utah, 7-5, 6-4, then kept his momentum in the Round of 32 going, upsetting No. 12 Jan Steenekamp of Montana, 7-5, 6-2.
The other CU fab freshman, Dvorak, from Prague, The Czech Republic upended Henry Gers of New Mexico, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4, then turned around later in the day to upset UNLV’s own and No. 14 Aviram Salomon, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Each of the CU freshmen has won three consecutive matches.
“Peter and Marek competed tremendously well for us today,” said CU head coach Sam Winterbotham. “That’s what we need to do coming into a tournament is to play two, three, and four seeded players in top 16. We have established two players (Bjork, Dvorak) in the top 16.”
The Buffs also saw one of its other freshman reach the Round of 32 with Marko Bundalo falling to Boise State’s Thomas Schoeck, 6-4, 7-5. Bundalo advanced to the Round of 32 winning earlier in the day defeating Adam Stutts of Montana State, 6-2, 6-2.
The CU men will also be scheduled to play in the doubles event with No. 8 seed Marcos Digliodo/Chad Tsuda and Marko Bundalo/Marek Dvorak playing in the Round of 32 on Friday.
