Game Notes - University of Colorado Athletics

Congratulations to CU ticket manager Ed Gow and his wife Andrea, as they welcomed a yet-to-be named, 6 pound-10 ounce, 19?-inch long baby boy into the world at 3:21 a.m. this morning.the kid was early; there was a planned cesarean this Monday; guess he wanted to see CU-NU.
Last Folsom Game: CU Football Radio Network producer Jerry Peters worked his final game at Folsom Field today, as he plans to retire. He has worked in the capacity since 1978, 22 seasons overall (minus 3 years CU wasn't with KOA from 1982-84).
Former QB John Hessler. Hess continues his rapid recovery from an Oct. 19 near fatal auto accident; the University (foundation) was able to arrange for a donated suite for the family, which was out in force this afternoon. In the third quarter, John's sister (Jolene Hessler Davis) told ABC that they had to turn the game off for a while because it was interfering with John's therapy. He will likely be transferred from hospital care to a rehab center as early as the first part of next week.
P John Torp. His second punt of the game, a 69-yarder, was the longest of his career, his fourth of 60-plus yards (three in 2003).
WR D.J. Hackett blocked CU's second punt of the season late in the first half; CU's other blocked punt was by WR Derek McCoy against Kansas. But the duo has more than a pair of blocked punts between them; they combined for 141 receptions for 1,894 yards and 18 TDs (Hackett: 78-1,013-7 TD; McCoy 63-883-11 TD); those are the best receiving numbers by a duo in CU history, topping Michael Westbrook (76-1,060) and Charles Johnson (57-1,149) in 1992, who combined for 129 for 1,749 yards and 15 scores.
WR D.J. Hackett (9-94, 2 TD). He established a single season record for receptions at CU with 78, topping the previous mark of 76 set by Michael Westbrook in 1992 (Westbrook was in attendance today, his first CU game in several years). The 94 yards upped his season total to 1,013, as he became just the sixth player to record 1,000 receiving yards in a single season; it was last done in 1996 by Rae Carruth (1,116). The nine catches today were the most every by a Buff against Nebraska; Phil Savoy had the previous high of eight in the 1995 game.
WR Derek McCoy (3-51, 1 TD). His 31-yard TD reception in the third quarter tied CU's career record of 20, set by Rae Carruth (1992-96); he finishes his CU career with 134 receptions (fifth), 2,038 yards (fifth; he passed Javon Green-2,031-today in becoming only the sixth Buff to record 2,000 yards receiving for a career).
WR Jeremy Bloom. He heads to Finland in the morning to join his U.S. Ski Team mates for the season's first World Cup competition in Ruka. Bloom has taken all of his final exams and will determine his football future in the coming months.
The Fourth Quarter. Colorado had owned the fourth quarter against Nebraska since the rivalry moved to the Friday after Thanksgiving in 1996. CU has still outscored NU in six of the eight fourth quarters and 83-32 overall, but the two times the Huskers got the better of the Buffs in the final stanza, they used them to rally from 1-point deficits for the win. Today's attendance of 53,444 was the 10th largest crowd of Folsom Field history, the second largest this season.
QB Joel Klatt (26-of-44, 269 yards; 3 TD/2 INT). His final season numbers are thus 233-of-358 (65.1%), for 2,614 yards with 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He set CU single season records for completions (old: Koy Detmer, 208 in 1996) and average completions per game (21.2; old record: 20.4 by Mike Moschetti in 1999). He also set a record for the most total plays in a season with 426 (old record: Mike Moschetti, 416 in 1999).
PK Mason Crosby. He scored five points today to finish the year with 53; that's a new freshman record at Colorado, topping the 48 scored by PK Tom Field in 1979 and TB Herchell Troutman in 1994. Four of his five kickoffs went for touchbacks, as for the year, only 10 of his 37 kickoffs were returned, with 26 going for touchbacks (17 out of the end zone).
OG Brian Daniels. He made his ninth start of the season today, setting a record for the most offensive line starts made by a true freshman in CU history (he came in tied with Clint Moore, who made eight in 1991).
Colorado passed for 269 yards to close the year with 3,351. a school record, besting the 3,271 in 1992.
POST-CONTACT YARDS. Press box figures indicate that Nebraska's Cory Ross picked up 69 of his yards after taking a first hit, with Jammal Lord netting 52 in that manner. Brian Calhoun netted 35 after the first hit for the Buffs.
This was only the second loss to a Big 12 North Division team in the last three seasons, as the Buffs are 13-2 against its division brethren since the start of 2001.
Nebraska stifled the Buffs on first down, as CU ran 28 plays for 80 yards in equal modes: 14 rushes for 40, 14 passes for 40. On third down (CU converted 11 of 20), the Buffs gained 124 yards in averaging 6.2 per play.
Colorado finishes 5-7 on the season, only its third losing season since 1984 (5-6 in 1997, 3-8 in 2000). and it will be only the fourth time in the last 19 seasons it won't be in a bowl game (1987, when it went 7-4, 1997, 2000, 2003).
