Buffs Tie For 14th In Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La. - The University of Colorado men's golf team couldn't make a move up the standings here Tuesday, as the Buffaloes finished in a 14th-place tie as the 17th Annual Louisiana Classics came to close.
SMU led from wire-to-wire in posting an 858 teams score, winning by three shots over Tulsa, as the Mustangs and Golden Hurricane were the only teams under par. The Buffs had an 894 team score, tying for 14th with Texas-San Antonio in the 15-team field.
It was the second best 54-hole team score on a par-72 course this season recorded by Colorado, which has been playing with two or three true freshmen in every meet this year.
Freshman Blake Moore scored his first under par round of his collegiate career, as his 2-under 70 gave him a 221 total for the meet, tying him for 27th place. That's 31 strokes he shaved off from his first college meet, The Prestige, last November. He became the third freshman to turn in a tournament-best performance for the Buffaloes in 2002-03, joining Edward McGlasson and Derek O'Neill, who were not on this trip.
Senior captain Stephen Carroll carded a 75 Tuesday for a 222 total, tying for 32nd, while junior Jeff Hanson recorded a second straight 74 to finish with a 225 in tying for 48th in his first spring competition after missing the opening trip due to sickness.
Sophomore Mike Brenneman (77-231) and freshman Michael Feuerstein (83-235) were the other CU performances on the 7,002-yard, par-72 Oakbourne Country Club course layout.
Tulsa's David Inglis claimed medalist honors, as he shot a 1-under 71 in the final round for an 8-under par 208 total, good for a three stroke win over Baylor's Ryan Baca and Texas A&M's Stephen Reed.
"This is the classic case of we're making improvement but it's not showing up in the results just yet, and that's going to happen with a young team," CU head coach Mark Simpson said. "We beat four teams on the last day and were with four shots of another five, so we're getting closer. Blake played very solid here, and on grasses we don't see that often, and that's a good sign, especially for a freshman. His first college round was a 90, and that'll rattle anybody, but, what, five rounds later he scores a 70 on a traditionally tough golf course, and it shows what he is capable of."
The Buffaloes will resume action in two weeks, hosting the fifth annual CU-Stevinson Ranch Invitational in Stevinson, Calif., March 24-25.
