Buffs Stop Four-Match Losing Streak

WICHITA, Kan. - Seniors Justin Hunter and Maciej Dilaj each ranked among the nation's top players won their respective match at No. 1 and No. 2 leading the Colorado men's tennis team to a 5-2 win over Wichita State, Sunday afternoon.
The Buffaloes end a four-match losing streak with the victory and improve to 3-12 on the season, while the Shockers dropped to 6-7. CU's win also ended Wichita State's three-match winning streak.
CU dominated from the first serve on sweeping the doubles portion for the first time since its opening match at the H-E-B Tournament in Corpus Christi against New Orleans (March 7) as Hunter and Chad Tsuda took the No. 1 spot, 8-5. Dilaj and Bucky Mink were equally impressive at No. 2 taking an easy 8-1 decision, and at No. 3 Jon Magnes and Marko Bundalo rolled to an 8-4 win.
With a 1-0 advantage, CU continued its dominance on the singles court sweeping the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 6 slots in straight sets. Hunter and Dilaj ranked the No. 98th and No. 101st, respectively among the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings swept the top two spots, along with Magnes at No. 6, followed by Bundalo, who needed three sets at No. 3 to round out the tally for a 5-2 CU win.
"It's been a tough season and a lot teams could have folded, but I'm proud of this team because we came out and competed," said CU head coach Sam Winterbotham. "Maciej came out on fire; Jon Magnes followed and today went through his rituals and staying composed down the stretch; and Marko played his best match at No. 3. Justin's match was the clincher and he came away with a very good win.
"All the doubles teams played very well and now we'll take a few days off and get ready for Nebraska with the same intensity, things will go our way."
Colorado takes to the road three more times in the next two weeks with trips to Nebraska (April 4), Denver (April 8) and Rice (April 13) before returning home to close out the Big 12 regular season against Oklahoma (April 19) and Oklahoma State (April 20).
