Buffs In 14th In Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La. - The University of Colorado men's golf team is a veteran participant in the Louisiana Classics, but one of the youngest teams CU has ever fielded here is having its struggles and is in 14th place after two rounds of the 17th annual event, which were completed here Monday.

SMU used four sub-par rounds and two even-par efforts en route to a 568, 8-under par team score to take a four stroke lead over Tulsa into the final 18 holes. Tulsa scored the best single round of the day (277) Monday afternoon when three of its players put up scores in the 60s. The Buffaloes were in 13th after the morning round (303), and despite lopping eight strokes off that score the second g-round for a 598 total, the Buffs ended the day in 14th place in the 15-team field, but leading district rival Kansas by two strokes.

Senior captain Stephen Carroll is pacing the Buffaloes, as he put up a 75-72-147 scorecard to stand tied for 28th through 36 holes on the 7,002-yard, par-72 Oakbourne Country Club course layout. Junior Jeff Hanson and freshman Blake Moore, one of three newcomers on the trip, are next in line for the Buffaloes, as they are tied for 53rd overall with 151 totals. It was the first spring competition for both, as Hanson missed the opening trip to Florida and Puerto Rico due to the flu, while Moore qualified for just his second meet as a Buffalo.

Freshman Michael Feuerstein (75-77-152) and sophomore Mike Brenneman (80-74-154) rounded out the CU performances.

Tulsa's David Inglis is the individual leader after recording a 70-67-137 effort, which is good for a one stroke lead over Texas A&M's Stephen Reed (68-70-138).

"Nobody got anything really going. There were some good shots, a few more bad shots, a bad choice here or there, just sort of a blah day," CU head coach Mark Simpson said. "Nothing horrible, but nothing great. But the bottom line is we're still progressing like I think we need to. At some point, we need to bear the fruits of our labor, hopefully by the end of April and the conference championships. We have three guys here that didn't play a lot in the fall, and they're learning but gaining quality experience. And there's going to be a lot of competition (for the travel squad) the rest of the way, as I suspect our competition at home is going to step up a bit, because when it's better in qualifying, it shows in the tournaments."

The final round of the tournament will be played Tuesday morning.
