Gorton's Record Time Wins Athlete of Week

BOULDER- . Junior track athlete, Sara Gorton ran the fourth-fastest collegiate 5K time in NCAA history last Thursday at the Mt. SAC Relays. Her time of 15:24.97 is a new CU record in the 5,000 meters, breaking Kara Wheeler's previous mark of 15:28.79 set in April of 2000. Gorton's time is also an NCAA qualifying mark and is the fastest time in the Big 12 this year.

She took third behind Ethiopian Ejegayehu Dibaba and Stanford senior Lauren Fleshman, earning a new personal best and school record in the process. She bettered the mark of 15:28.79, set on the same track by Kara Wheeler in 2000.

Gorton is a only a junior here at CU and has already accomplished many remarkable records. Others nominated for this weeks award were Jessica Vanderdys (women's tennis), and Mark Bundalo (men's tennis).

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Jessica Vanderdys, Centreville, Va.Jessica Vanderdys won her 10th singles match at the No. 5 position helping Colorado clinch its upset victory over No. 24 Oklahoma, 4-3, at the Ranch Country Club in Westminster. Vanderdys, a freshman from Centreville, Va., teamed with senior Sarah Burrows at No. 3 doubles for an 8-5 win to improve their doubles record to 9-3. In singles, Vanderdys is 12-6 in singles this season. Colorado, winners of its last three of four are ranked No. 46 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, improved to 12-7 overall and 5-6 in conference play.

MEN'S TENNIS: Marko Bundalo, Freshman, Pancevo, YugoslaviaMarko Bundalo won a pair of singles and doubles matches over the weekend in Colorado's near upset wins against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State by identical 4-3 scores. Against the Sooners, Bundalo claimed an easy 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, and in doubles teamed with Jon Magnes for 8-5 victory. Bundalo kept to his winning ways a day later against Oklahoma State with an impressive come-from-behind singles victory at No. 3, 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-3. He also teamed with Magnes for an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles. Bundalo, a freshman from Pancevo, Yugoslavia has totaled 11 singles wins this year and a 7-1 record at No. 3 doubles.
