Quotes
Colorado Head Coach Gary Barnett
GENERAL-"I guess that we better get used to
this. That's two weeks in a row. I
think we just had enough to win. UCLA was bigger and stronger than
us up front. . We had to scratch and
claw to fine a way to win the game and today we just had enough. It's great to be 2-0 at this point
in the season with the schedule we
have.
ON DE MARQUES HARRIS-"He broke his leg and
he's having surgery in a couple of hours. He's done for the year. He still has a red shirt
year and we're going to plan on that.
His teammates really came together after that and
played
for him. It was
apparent the minute that they asked for the stretcher. I knew
when the kids came off the field, they
said he had broke it."
ON THE PLAY OF THE DEFENSE-"Other than the
lapse that we had when it was 3rd and
30, we had a couple of freshmen who made mistakes. That's the kind
of stuff that you live with when you
play young guys. Other than that, it was pretty good. We were much better than last week. I don't
know what they ran, but I don't
think it was much."
ON THE RUN DEFENSE-"We played hard inside
this week. We got off the ball well. We dominated the line with our defensive line and I think
it helped having a rookie running back
in there."
ON TE JOE KLOPFENSTEIN-"He had three catches
and the last one was for a touchdown.
That's a young guy who can play. He had a tremendous
freshman year. I've been preaching to
the players that we have a lot of guys out there
who can make plays. . He's just one more
weapon for us."
ON THE GAME-WINNING DRIVE-"We went to the two
minute drill. We knew they were tired
and we were just trying to use that and the altitude and keep
them from catching their
breath."
ON THE SEASON'S TONE-"I really don't think
this team has set the plate for its season. Right now, with the schedule we have, we can't
afford to focus on anything except for
Sunday. We can't look ahead."
ON THE GAME GOING TO THE WIRE-"You know, you
can't think about it. You just go out
there and handle what happens and react and respond. I think it
(late game winning drives) helps
define who we are. We can put that in the bank and know
when it happens in the future that we can do
it."
ON TRICK PLAYS -"We're not going to hold
anything back out there. We're going to go broke on everything. We'll have another one
next week, and they'regoing to have to
learn how to defend it."
ON QB JOEL KLATT-"I think he had a better
view of Mars than most people (after being hurt). .Joel goes out an come back and I think that
was a huge lift for our receives and
for our offense."
ILB SEAN TUFTS
ON THE DEFENSE: "When we needed to, we showed up, but we didn't
play well on third down. We played the run really well today,
but the pass game really burned us."
ON LAST STAND: "It was a safety and linebacker blitz. They
had no one left to protect the quarterback after the halfback split
out. We'll enjoy this win today, and we'll come back tomorrow
and start preparing for Washington State."
ON DE MARQUES HARRIS: "He's a senior leader and a good friend of
ours. It's terrible to end the year like that, but we'll play the
rest of the season for him."
TE JOE KLOPFENSTEIN
GENERAL: "I was coming off the top, Jesse Wallace pulled both
defenders away, and I was wide open for the score. When I saw
no defenders on me, I knew I was going to get the ball. They
were playing man on me, and I just ran across the end zone.
It was a great throw and an easy catch. When I'm
running that route, I'm not thinking about the pressure I'm just
thinking about pulling the ball in. It was my first CU
touchdown and it felt great when all my teammates ran up to me.
I want to make an impression and play as well as I possibly
can."
QB JOEL KLATT
GENERAL: "CSU was a challenge, but UCLA was physically so gifted.
We had to pick our way downfield on the underneath coverages.
They've got a great front four. They're big and
physical and very strong. They're good players and they
really got after it today. We were fortunate because we
didn't play well today. When Marques went down, the team came
together and we knew we had to make a play. I think our team
enjoys the two-minute drill. We have great receivers. I
threw some terrible passes but the receivers made me look good.
Our 'D' played a hell of a ball game and kept us in the game.
This team has a lot of heart and character, and we beat a great
team today."
ON COMING OUT OF THE GAME: "I knew where I was. You know,
it's one of those deals that happens in football."
ON WINNING TOUCHDOWN PASS: "He did a hell of a job. He beat
his man and popped open and made a great catch."
CB PHIL JACKSON
GENERAL: "It feels great. I haven't been 2-0 since I've been
here. To be 2-0 is a great feeling. I gave up a big
play in the first half, and all that was going through my head was
'give me one more chance.' We knew we had to get three and out, and
try to make the turnover. We picked up our pressure a lot and
I pressed the receiver."
ON MARQUES HARRIS: "If you see one of your teammates go down, it
just gives you an anger when you go back out on the field. "
ON WASHINGTON STATE: "Our defense is going to have to defend
the pass a whole lot better because we know they like to throw the
ball."
PK MASON CROSBY
ON HIS FIELD GOAL: "It was so exciting. I was ready to go
when they called my number. The nerves were running a little
bit, but it was exciting."
ON THE BLOCKED PAT: "I felt like I hit it well, but I guess it was
low and the guy made a great play."
OG MARWAN HAGE
GENERAL: "We knew we had to score at least one touchdown to win,
the offense came together. We fast-tempoed them and took it
in for the score. The line was more relaxed this week.
UCLA gave us tons of stunts and movement, but we were more
relaxed this week than last week. We still have a lot to
improve on for next week. "
UCLA Head Coach Karl Dorrell
GENERAL-"Part of it was first-game jitters.
We've got a young team, but we'll get
better as the season unfolds. I'm proud of the effort. I thought
the team played pretty hard. We ended
up losing our starting quarterback fairlyearly, so we were up against it early. But I liked how we tried
to hang in there. Iwant to always try
to build on what this team has done, which is they fought
all the way to the end. I was proud of their
effort."
ON THE CHANGE OF
QUARTERBACKS-"They were really pretty close anyway, so we
didn't have to change very much when Drew
Olson came in."
ON CU'S GAME WINNING DIVE-"Part of it was
that we got more worn down. We felt the altitude and started cramping a little bit. The
defense was probably on the field
a lot more than they should have been. We'll all learn from
this."
ON HIS FIRST GAME AS HEAD COACH-"It was like
any other game on the sideline. It all
comes down to strategy and what you're trying to get done. I
wasn't as nervous as I thought I was
going to be once the game started. We were just trying to do the best thing we could as a
program."
ON UCLA'S RUNNING GAME-"You try to create
some kind of continuity on offense and
I think we tried to at least get into a rhythm. We never really
got into a rhythm as much as we should
have."
ON FAMILIARITY WITH CU-"I never did really
say I knew the opponent so well. Everybody was anticipating that. This was a different
team with a different quarterback."
