BOULDER ? The University of Colorado men’s basketball team returns to non-conference action after an 11-day absence on Sunday, Nov. 28 as they host Northwestern University from the Big Ten Conference at the Coors Events Center with a 2:07 (MST.) tip. The game will be a broadcasted by Fox Sports Rocky Mountain.
The Buffaloes/Wildcats tilt is the second match up in as many years between the two schools with CU opening the 2003-04 campaign with a 67-56 road victory at Evanston. Only four players on the current roster played at Northwestern (Glean Eddy, Chris Copeland, Marcus Hall, Jayson Obazuaye, all combining for 18 points.). The Buffs lead the all-time series 5-3 and with the exception of last year’s match up the seven previous meetings were held from 1949-1968.
The Buffs, playing their second consecutive game against a school from the Big 10 are 1-1 on the young season have defeated the College of Charleston (72-57) in the season opener back on Nov. 15 and falling at Michigan (69-60) back on Nov. 17. Both games were part of the Preseason NIT.
Freshman guard Richard Roby leads two other CU players in scoring double-digits at 18.5 a game, followed by sophomore Marcus Hall (11.5 ppg.) and junior transfer Julius Ashby (10.5 ppg.). Ashby also tops CU on the glass pulling down a 9.0 rebounding average along with four blocks a game. Against the Wolverines, Ashby tied a school record for blocked shots in a road game, swatting six.
Northwestern continues their month of November road tour playing its fourth straight game away from Evanston. The Wildcats played at the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska achieving a 1-2 record. After the opening the season with a win over Portland (56-53), the Wildcats fell to New Mexico State (64-61) and Utah State (64-57). Vedran Vukusic (14.7 ppg.), T.J. Parker (14.0), and Davor Duvancic (11.3) are NW’s triple threat, while head coach Bill Carmody begins his fifth season at N’Western (54-66) and his ninth overall (146-91).
After Northwestern, Colorado travels to Oregon State and California for back-to-back Pac-10 road trips, Dec. 4 and 7, respectively before heading home with four consecutive non-conference games with in-state rival Colorado State, Saturday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m.
