HOUSTON- The University of Colorado football team (7-5, 4-4 Big 12) kicked off its EV1.net Houston Bowl preparations Sunday, as the Buffaloes drilled at the University of Houston for two hours in the morning.

“We came out with great energy and tempo,” head coach Gary Barnett said. “We were a little rusty, but overall it was a really good go.”

After taking three days off to be at home for the holiday season, the Buffs reconvened in Houston Christmas night. The majority of out-of-state players flew in from their hometowns throughout the day, while the official Colorado team charter arrived Saturday evening.

With the exception of senior defensive tackle Brandon Dabdoub, every player landed in the Lone Star state ready for Sunday morning’s practice. Dabdoub, whose flight was delayed due to a rare snowfall in Louisiana, made it to Houston in time for the second half of the session, after arriving Sunday morning.

“It was crazy because we’re not used to getting snow like that down South,” Dabdoub stated. “Fortunately I got here in time for practice. I think everybody was very pumped up, and I think it was a good start to the practice week.”

The Buffs will practice Monday and hold a walk-through Tuesday before squaring off against the University of Texas-El Paso (8-3, 6-2 WAC) at Reliant Stadium Wednesday afternoon (2:30 p.m. MST, ESPN).

Barnett said CU will practice Monday “a little harder than usual two days before a game.” The sixth-year head coach noted that he has been impressed with his team’s focus and preparations over the past couple weeks for what he has dubbed “the first game of next season.”

“We came down here on a five-day business trip,” he added. “That is our main goal, to win this game. This will be the first game for next season, not the last game of last season.”
