Senior All-Big 12 Candidate Kate Fagan returns for her second season of the critically acclaimed "Fagan Files" which chronicle the life and times of Kate and her teammates. Today she talks about CU's rough trip to Manhattan and is looking for some love for the Buffaloes.
It’s been a long few weeks in a Colorado Buffalo uniform. We went on a string of road victories and then hit a brick wall in the form of the Kansas State Wildcats. Fortunately, we’ve put ourselves in a good position to rebound from that loss and still contend in the Big 12.
Previously in this diary I wrote about the crowd at Baylor. Last week we traveled to Columbia, Missouri to take on the Tigers. They play in an older gym called the Hearnes Center. It’s one of my favorite gyms in the conference (along with Kansas’s Allen Fieldhouse)?it has character. Missouri had great attendance for our game. Somewhere around 7,000 people (as opposed to dogs or fish). Right. Anyway, their crowd was large and vocal. For the first 30 minutes of the game I kept hearing the band and random fans yelling, “Wirt Eats Dirt!” Okay, fair enough, I remember thinking. Obviously Randie doesn’t eat dirt (anymore), but the chant rhymes. Understandable. Then, towards the end of the game, I hear, “Wirt Eats Babies!” Wait, now you’ve gone too far. It doesn’t even rhyme! And when did we make the leap from dirt to babies? There’s a big difference between the two. Regardless, we carried on and pulled out the win by two points.
So, here and now, I make my plea to increase attendance. I know we didn’t exactly sparkle our last time out, but we need a fan base like K-State. We need 7,000 people wearing black and gold. Preferably. If you have a favorite blue sweater you want to wear to the game, more power to you. It’s the yelling, screaming and intimidation factor we truly crave. After Sunday I don’t know if we deserve your attendance this Wednesday versus Iowa State, but we’d appreciate the chance to win you back in our favor. We are 18-3 overall, 7-2 in Big 12 play. We’re still in the hunt for the Big 12 championship, but we really need that distinct home court advantage which we continually face when we’re on the road. So, my final plea! Here it is: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE. Eloquent, huh?
