Men's Tennis Drop Two Matches at Blue-Gray Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Colorado men’s tennis team dropped two matches in the second and third rounds of the Blue-Gray National Collegiate Classic falling 4-3 to North Carolina State on Friday night and 4-0 to No.30 Fresno State on Saturday.

 

Colorado, who dropped to 5-8 after the two losses, got their only win in doubles play against NC-State with Marko Bundalo and Peter Bjork getting a 8-4 victory over Val Banada and Dennis Myers.  Bundalo and Bjork also won in singles competition with Bundalo winning 6-3, 6-4 against Will Shaw at the No. 2 spot and Bjork defeating Banada 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3. 

 

Bundalo increased his record at No. 2 to 5-2 on the season.  Evan Dixon beat Tyghe Carstens 6-1, 6-2 to pick up the other victory for Colorado.

 

"It was a disappointing loss,” said head coach Sam Winterbotham.  “They (NC-State) competed very well.  I think we are more talented, but they out competed us.”

 

Colorado then took on Fresno State on Saturday to face their second Top 30 team in the country in as many days.  The Buffaloes managed to win only one game in single play, but the duo of Bundalo and Bjork had a close finish against Fresno State’s Greg Shearer and Charles Irie before falling 8-6 in No. 2 doubles. 

 

“Fresno State discovered that we had holes. We have holes at the No. 1 spot, as well as No.5 and No. 6.  We have to find players that have to fight through this (tough) schedule.  If we keep making the effort then we will be better,” Winterbotham said.

 

Colorado (5-8) will return home to face Texas on Wednesday, March 17 at 1 p.m.  They will then travel to Virginia next week to face Virginia on March 22 and Virginia Tech on March 24.

 

“It's tough when you get beat, but I will get to see how the teams act through this adversity,” finished Winterbotham.
