BOULDER ? The Colorado men’s tennis team closed the regular season on a winning note defeating Wichita State, 6-1 in the unlikely way of earning a victory ? by default.

With CU leading 2-1 during the afternoon play, the match was moved indoors three hours later to the Harvest House Indoor Tennis Bubble due to inclement weather in the Boulder area.

The six singles positions were played first with the top three slots (No. 1, No. 2, No. 3) finishing outside at the CU-Boulder South Campus Tennis Courts. The Shockers took the early 1-0 lead at the No. 1 slot 6-4, 6-4, however the Buffaloes rebounded with a pair of victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. Peter Bjork won his second match in a row and his 10th match of the spring taking an easy 6-0, 6-1 decision over Carlo Contente at No. 2.

At No. 3, Marek Dvorak earned his 19th victory of the season with a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Marko Despot. It was Dvorak’s fourth win out of his last sixth matches.

Then the weather turned rainy.

About three hours later both teams set their sights to the Harvest House to conclude its matches. However, Wichita State head coach Kevin Kowalik refused to finish the match and defaulted the remaining singles and doubles play.

“Peter and Marek played great along with Elliot,” said CU head coach Sam Winterbotham. “Our guys came to play. They were tough and confident today. We’re working and playing a lot better and we’ll move forward to the Big 12 Tournament on a two-match winning streak. I’m proud of these guys.”

CU improves to 7-15 to close out the regular season with two straight victories heading to the Big 12 Tournament, April 29?May 2 at Norman, Okla. The Shockers drop to 14-12 and have their six-match winning streak snapped. Today’s match was the first between the two teams since 1991.
