BOULDER – The University of Colorado football team conducted its fourth consecutive day of spring drills Monday afternoon, as the Buffaloes worked in full pads for two hours and capped off the session with a 20-minute scrum.

“We had a good day for a first knock-‘em-down day,” interim head coach Brian Cabral stated afterwards.  “We fought through four days.  We got some good work done.  It was a push; we have worked really hard.”

Having not held four spring practices in a row since 1980, the Buffs believe that their early uninterrupted gridiron exertion has generated a solid start to the 2004 campaign and set a strong tone for the upcoming season.  However, while they feel good about the recent practice productivity, players and coaches alike admit they’re ready for Tuesday’s day off.

“Our coaches and players have worked a lot of overtime (lately),” Cabral added.  “(Tuesday) is a much needed and much deserved break.”

“I think we got some really good things done here the past few days,” starting quarterback Joel Klatt said.  “Everybody out here has put in a lot of work and we have all had a great attitude and work ethic.  It will be nice to take tomorrow off, but we realize that we still have a lot to do.  We’ll be ready again on Wednesday.”

Injury Update: Cornerback Terrence Wheatley will miss the rest of spring practice, as the sophomore dislocated his wrist during Sunday’s drills and had surgery Monday evening.  Wheatley, who started two games last season, will rehab the injury for three months and return to full strength in time for fall camp.

Junior linebacker Kyle Griffith remains out of practice suffering from what Cabral confirmed as “some form of hepatitis.”  Griffith, who was second in special teams points in 2003, had several tests done on his liver during the day.  It is not know when he will return to practice, or the extent of his illness right now.

The Buffs will take Tuesday off and hold team meetings, and then return to the practice fields Wednesday afternoon.
