SULLIVAN'S SPIKES DEBUTS FROM ATHENS

Welcome to Sullivan's Spikes! Over
the next few weeks U.S. Olympian Erik Sullivan, the newest member
of the Colorado volleyball coaching staff, will give an insiders
perspective on Team USA's quest for a gold medal in mens'
volleyball in Athens. An eight-year veteran of the US
National Team, Sullivan is competing with Team USA in his second
Olympic games.
August 5, 2004
We've been in Europe for about a
week now. The trip started out with a tournament in Serbia
and Montenegro. We played three other teams and ended up 2-1,
including a very nice win over the defending Olympic champion
Serbia and Montenegro. The team's experience there was very
nice. Belgrade was a beautiful city, the food was very good,
and the people were nice. There was very little anti-American
sentiment, just some booing at the matches, which was nice
considering our countries recent history together.
For the last two days we have been in the Olympic Village.
The Greeks have a done a fine job with the living conditions.
Its still hard to tell if everything is done, but what is
finished is extremely comfortable. Of course the USA
delegation has added its two cents to the US portion of the village
to make it a little nicer and to try to give us every edge for
competion. Needless to say the last two days have been
very busy. Moving in, unpacking, processing, and practicing
have taken its toll, but it feels like we are starting to get
settled into our home for the next month.
We leave for the Greek Island of Syros tonight to train and to get
out of Athens and to relax a little bit. We'll be back about
the 10th and begin our final preparations for the games.
