BUFFS CLAIM 11 WINS IN CU OPEN

Miller reached 6-8 on his first high jump attempt, a convincing six inch cushion ahead of runner-up Ian Storz (6-2) of Mines. His first leap of 21-8 ? in the long jump was a pr, as he held on through five more attempts for his second win on the day. He was the definitive winner in the 60-m hurdles in 8.66 as Storz from Mines was second in 9.56.
“I came out and did what I thought I would do, but did better in the hurdles than I thought,” said Miller. “It’s sometimes hard competing at home because you’re so used to practicing here. But this was motivating going into my first heptathlon next week.”
Including Miller’s three victories, the Buffs won 11 events including Kristin Hoogheem (mile), Mikaela Raddatz (600-yard), Kate Hamera (800-m), the men’s and women’s 4x400-m relay, women’s triple jump (Amber Casey), Matt McCue (mile), Sam Napp (200-m) and Pete Janson (3,000-m).
In a discipline thought in the preseason to make a lot more noise than it had in previous years, it was a great start of the season for several throwers that established new personal records Friday. Junior Andy Passen threw a pr 53-9 ? in the weight throw and two events later tossed a 53-7 ? to finish second in the shot put. Sophomore James Begley tied his pr (46-2 ?) in the weight and Zach Hazen (59-4 ?) bettered his. In the women’s weight throw, Cortney Hutmacher’s pr of 55-11 earned her a runner-up finish in the event while senior Carly Newlands established a pr of 49-5 ?.
“There weren’t many eye-opening performances here today. Of note were Zach Hazen, Cortney Hutmacher confirming her December (inter-squad) performance and Pete Janson throwing his hat in the ring of Big 12 distance runners,” said head coach Mark Wetmore. “The rest were newcomers showing us their ability and the kind of Christmas’ they had.
We’re a long way away from being Big 12 contenders, though I think that the improvements shown between December and this meet, that we could be before long.”
