MEN?S TENNIS FALLS AT NO. 42 BOISE STATE, 4-0
BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State men's tennis team defeated Colorado, 4-0, to win the ITA Mountain Region Indoor Championship and earn the region’s berth in the ITA National Indoor Tournament Feb. 17-20 in Chicago.
In the Saturday evening match, Boise State’s doubles’s teams won the first team point with Thomas Schoeck and Luke Shields at number one doubles and Ikaika Jobe and Matias Silva at number two doubles.
The match then went into singles with Schoeck winning at two, Silva winning at three and Jobe winning at four. The rest of the matches then stopped play (as the regional tournament used NCAA tournament format). Shields at number one against Colorado’s Marko Bundalo won a tight first set 7-6 and the two were in a tie-breaker for the second set when play stopped.
Earlier in the day, CU earned its place in the regional final upsetting No. 33 New Mexico, 4-1. The win over New Mexico is the first one over the Lobos since 1993 and only their fifth in 20 meetings against New Mexico.
“The team showed tremendous character; they competed against a very good team and never quit,” said CU head coach Sam Winterbotham. “We played a very good team. They fought and fought and today happened not to be our day. It’s a very tough place to play with 500 fans screaming on every point.
“Marek (Dvorak) played well today as did doubles. We took a good step today with a great deal of positives.”
CU returns home to host the University of Denver Pioneers at the Meadow Creek Country Club, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. before hosting number one ranked and defending champion Baylor, Sunday, Jan. 30, 10 a.m. at the Harvest House, Millennium Hotel.
