Candace Rucker has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball and continue her education at the University of Colorado in 2006-07, CU head coach Kathy McConnell-Miller announced Thursday.

Rucker, a 5-foot-10 guard from Memphis, Tenn., averaged 22 points, 11 rebounds and six assists per game as a junior at Northside High School. An all-district, all-region and all-state performer, Rucker led Northside to a 28-5 record in 2004-05, advancing to the state quarterfinals. She earned a spot on the Memphis Commercial Appeal’s Best of the Preps/All-Metro Class AAA team as a junior and was picked as this winter’s preseason player of the year. Rucker is ranked as the 36th best guard in the country by the All-Star Girls Report and is listed as the No. 1 prep senior in Memphis by memphishoopers.com.

“Candace has the ability to impact our program at both ends of the floor,” McConnell-Miller said. “Offensively, she is explosive. She has great range. She can shoot from the perimeter or score off the bounce. Candace can create in transition yet has the ability to break down defenses. Defensively she will allow us to pressure the length of the floor. She anticipates well and can create turnovers. Candace is the complete package. We are fortunate to have signed a player of her caliber.”

The NCAA early signing period, which began Wednesday, runs through Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Colorado will play its second of two exhibition games tomorrow, at 7 p.m. against Regis University in the Coors Events/Conference Center. The Buffaloes open regular season action on Friday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m. against Cal State-Fullerton in the CECC.
