TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ? University of Colorado head cross country Mark Wetmore was named the NCAA Mountain Region Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year and  junior Billy Nelson was named the Mountain Region Men’s Athlete of the Year, presented here Saturday night at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships Banquet.

            Wetmore’s coach of the year honors are the ninth and tenth, respectively, as he has been the men’s region coach of the year on seven occasions, and women’s coach of the year three times.  The Colorado men and women swept the NCAA Mountain Region titles last weekend in Provo, Utah.  It was the men’s 12th win in the qualifying race in 14 seasons and the women’s fifth in 12.

Nelson won the men’s individual title in last weekend’s race, the besting teammate Bret Schoolmeester by fifth-tenths of a second.  It was his first postseason victory in his career.

The NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will be run Monday, Nov. 21st here on the LaVern-Gibson Cross Country Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.  CU’s men’s team is ranked third and the women are rated sixth heading into the race. Both teams won the NCAA titles last season.
