BOULDER? “The fans behind the bench” presented the eighth annual Buffalo Heart award to senior quarterback Joel Klatt after Saturday’s home finale against Nebraska.

The award, which has been presented for the last eight years, is voted on by fans based on who they think best exemplifies having several qualities, including spirit, dedication and heart.

“The guys that have received the award before, I have tremendous respect for,” Klatt said. “I take a lot of pride in receiving that honor. One of the best compliments I can get is from people watching me and telling me that I play hard, so I am very appreciative of the fans for noticing how hard I work.”

By way of fan voting coordinated by Buff Club member Patrick Grimes, Klatt follows in the footsteps of former winners WR Darrin Chiaverini (1998), QB Mike Moschetti (1999), WR Eric McCready (2000), TB Cortlen Johnson (2001), DT Tyler Brayton (2002), FS Medford Moorer (3003) and TB Bobby Purify (2004).

Klatt already owns 39 single-game, season or career records for Colorado. His assault on all of CU’s major career passing and total offense marks is just one indication of how valuable the former walk-on has been to the Buffs.

“It’s a blessing to have Joel as our quarterback,” head coach Gary Barnett said. “Not only because he’s great to be around as a person, but because of his knowledge, his age and his maturity.”
