No. 25 Colorado Takes On No. 11 Texas And Baylor
UP NEXT: No. 25 Colorado (13-7, 9-6 Big 12) hosts No. 11 Texas (18-3, 12-2) on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. It is Youth Night at the Coors Events Center and anyone 13 and under gets in for $1. The Buffs will then head to Waco, Texas, for a contest against Baylor on Nov. 12 at 6 p.m. MT.
WHATGÇÖS ON TV?: The Nov. 9 match against No. 11 Texas will be televised by FSN Rocky Mountain. The match is set to start at 7 p.m. at the Coors Events Center. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling the CU Ticket Office at 1-303-49BUFFS (2-8337) .
BUFFS STAMPEDE INTO NATIONAL POLL: Colorado is making its debut at No. 25 on the CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Poll. The poll was released on Monday with the Buffs collecting 91 points, besting Tennessee by 10 points for the final position.
Colorado has been receiving votes in the poll for the last three weeks prior to being ranked. This is the first national ranking for CU since the Buffs were ranked 25th from Sept. 20 through Oct. 3 in 2004. It also marks the 104th time the Buffs have been ranked in the poll. CU was ranked eighth on Sept. 14, 1993 to earn its best ranking and has been ranked in the top-10 on seven occasions.
The Big 12 Conference has five teams that are either listed in the top 25 or are receiving votes.
ON THE SEASON: Colorado is 13-7 overall and is 9-6 in the Big 12. CU is currently fourth in the Big 12 and is ranked for the first time this season.
The Buffs have won their last seven contests and are 8-2 in their last 10 matches. The last time CU won seven in a row was in 1998 when the Buffs won 10 straight.
CU has defeated three ranked teams in its last seven matches; with two of those wins coming on the road. CU took two consecutive matches against ranked opponents for the first time since 1996 when the Buffs stunned Kansas State and Texas A&M on Oct. 12 and 16.
The first of the two consecutive wins against ranked teams came against No. 20 Kansas State. It was the first win over a ranked opponent this season for Colorado as the Buffs beat the Wildcats 30-14, 30-25, 25-30, 28-30, 15-5. CU followed it up with a win at 24th-ranked Texas A&M. The Buffs rallied back from a 0-2 deficit and won 20-30, 25-30, 30-26, 30-28, 15-10.
ColoradoGÇÖs most recent victory against a ranked team came on Oct. 29 as the Buffs shocked eighth-ranked Missouri 20-30, 30-28, 23-30, 30-27, 15-12 in Columbia, Mo. CU played in front of 2,571, the fourth largest crowd in MU history.
Four of ColoradoGÇÖs losses have come to CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 ranked opponents. CUGÇÖs first loss of the season came at the hands of third-rated and defending national champion Stanford. The Buffs fell in four to 18th-ranked Texas in Austin on Sept. 14. Colorado came back home to face its second and third consecutive ranked opponents in top-ranked Nebraska and eighth-ranked Missouri. CU fell in three to both opponents.
Senior right side hitter Allie Griffin is averaging 4.96 kills per game while hitting .305 on the year. She ranks second in the Big 12 in kills and is 12th in hitting percentage. She is ranked 17th in the NCAA in kills. Griffin has hit more than 20 kills in nine matches this season; including a career-high 29 against Kansas State on Oct. 12. She notched her 1,000th-career kill with her first kill in the fifth game against Kansas on Oct. 1. Sophomore Amber Sutherland is averaging 3.60 per game. She owns a .222 attack percentage. Sutherland ranks 10th in the league in kills. ColoradoGÇÖs 15.85 kills per game is fourth in the Big 12.
Freshman middle blocker Lauren Schaefer leads the Buffs with 69 total blocks (nine solo and 60 assists) on the season. She is averaging 0.92 blocks per game. Junior middle blocker Lara Bossow has two block solos and 60 assists on the season. The Buffs are averaging 2.27 blocks per game and are 11th in the Big 12.
Junior setter Ashley NuGÇÖu has passed out 1,048 assists this season to average 13.27 per game, which ranks 15th in the NCAA. She currently ranks third in the Big 12 and leads Colorado to a .257 attack percentage that ranks fourth in the league. The BuffaloesGÇÖ defense is led by senior Nicole Carr. Carr has picked up 217 digs (2.75 per game) this season and has played five games as the teamGÇÖs libero. Carr notched her 1,000th-career dig on Oct. 1 versus Kansas. Sutherland ranks 15th in the Big 12 with 216 digs (2.77 per game). Sophomore libero Therese Vinal has collected 167. The Buffs are seventh in the Big 12 with 13.70 digs per game.
