BOULDER? Junior place-kicker Mason Crosby was named a first team All-American by the Associated Press, making him CU’s 27th consensus All-American in school history and the first since punter Mark Mariscal earned the honor in 2002.

"It’s always been a dream of mine to be an All-American and put my name on the list of great names that have played at CU,” Crosby said. “This is definitely one of my greatest accomplishments.”

Crosby connected on 21-of-28 field goals on the year, including 5-of-7 from 50 and beyond?best in the college football. His 58-yarder at Miami tied for the longest field goal made at sea level without a tee in NCAA history. His average make on the year was a national-best 41.2 yards.

He led the team in scoring with 94 points, and his 231 career points are tied for second among all-time scoring leaders in CU history.

Regarded by his coaches as a “once-in-a-lifetime player,” Crosby was presented with the Bill McCartney Award at the team banquet on Dec. 11, for special teams achievement. In addition, he was a unanimous first team All-Big 12 selection by the conference coaches and the Associated Press.

Crosby finished just six votes behind Oregon State’s Alexis Serena for the Lou Groza Award, given to the nation’s top kicker; however he received first team All-American honors from every voting entity except the coaches, who gave the edge to Serena.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling to be recognized by so many people around the country,” Crosby said. “It’s just unreal to me, and it’s certainly a great honor.”

A look at Crosby’s 2005 statistics:

21-28 FG, average distance of each make: 41.2
5-7 from 50+, led the NCAA in 50+ makes
13-18 from 40+
31-31 PAT
94 points (led team)
61 kickoffs: 43 touchbacks, only 18 returned, average starting yardline for opponent on all kicks: the 22
