Men's Tennis Drops 6-1 Loss At No. 49 TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas ? The No. 49-ranked Texas Christian University men’s tennis team ended the 2005 regular season with a 6-1 victory over No. 59 Colorado on Sunday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs improved to 7-13 with the victory, while the Buffaloes lost their fourth straight and fell to 8-13.
TCU won an exciting doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead. On court three, Radu Barbu and Jacopo Tezza registered an 8-4 victory over Marek Dvorak and Jan Zelezny. The Buffs responded with Marcos Digliodo and Chad Tsuda’s 8-5 triumph versus the nation’s No. 11-rated duo of Rafael Abreu and Fabrizio Sestini at the No. 1 position. Digliodo and Tsuda broke a four-match losing streak for their fifth dual victory.
The match at two doubles between TCU’s Jordan Freitas and Jacob Martin, and CU’s Peter Bjork and Marko Bundalo featured no breaks of serve. In the tiebreaker, the Frogs trailed 6-4 but managed to win four points in a row to claim the victory.
In singles, Abreu put the Purple and White up 2-0 when he defeated Tsuda in straight sets at the six singles, 6-0, 7-5. Abreu trailed 5-2 in the second set before running off five games in a row. Less than a minute later, Bundalo put Colorado on the board with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Martin at the No. 2 position for his 18th match win of the year. Shortly afterwards, 31st-ranked Sestini won his third singles match in row, beating Zelezny 7-6(5), 6-1 at the top spot.
The clinching match came at No. 5 singles. Freitas took the first set from Dvorak, 6-2, but he lost the second by a 6-3 count. Dvorak began the third stanza with a 2-0 advantage before Freitas won three straight games. Up 5-4 with Dvorak serving, Freitas pushed the game to 0-40 before winning the sixth point on a lob from Dvorak that sailed long.
Barbu was the next Frog to pick up a victory, downing Bjork at the No. 3 slot, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Tezza finished off the day with a 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-4 triumph against Digliodo on court four.
CU returns home after spending the last eight matches on the road to close out the regular season against Oklahoma (Saturday, April 23) and Texas Tech (Sunday, April 24) at the South Campus Tennis Courts beginning at 1 p.m.
