Men's Tennis Upended by No. 11 Virginia at National Indoors

SEATTLE ? The University of Colorado men’s tennis team dropped their third straight match in as many days falling to No. 6 seed/No. 11 ranked Virginia, 4-0, Sunday night at the 16-team at the United States Tennis Association-Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Men's Team Indoor Championships at the University of Washington.
The Buffaloes, seeded No. 15 and ranked No. 54 nationally lost to No. 2 Georgia, 4-0; No. 11 Virginia, 4-0; and No. 15 LSU, 4-1 over the three-day event against the nation’s elite schools.
CU (4-3) advanced to the national indoor tournament after defeating Utah and host Boise State as the No. 3 seed at the Mountain Regional this past January.
“Our guys gave every ounce of energy and effort and I couldn’t be more proud of them,” said CU head coach Sam Winterbotham. “This tournament is the elite of the elite; we played a Georgia and LSU team that will be competing for a national title, and a very good Virginia team. I told the guys that we as coaches are so proud of what they are doing and that their effort was better than it was before we came here.”
Against LSU, Marek Dvorak was the lone CU player to earn a point winning his No. 6 singles position with a straight-set winner over Martel Campbell 7-6(3), 6-4. Although the match was already decided, Chad Tsuda had his match called in the third set after rallying from a set down and coming back to win 6-4 in the second. Tsuda led in the third set, 4-1.
Colorado heads back to its regular season schedule with three straight road matches against New Mexico State (March 3), No. 65 New Mexico (March 4) and Portland (March 5). All matches will be played at Albuquerque, N.M.
