McFarland Named Academic All-American

BOULDER ? University of Colorado sophomore forward Jackie McFarland has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America University Division Women’s Basketball second team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
McFarland, an accounting major who sports a 3.97 grade point average, is the lone sophomore joining nine seniors and four juniors on the three Academic All-America teams which consist of five players each. All five of the first team members are seniors while McFarland’s second team includes two seniors and two juniors.
She is the first CU women’s basketball player to be named a second team Academic All-American and only the second overall. Former CU guard Corky O’Rourke was a third team pick in 1981.
A native of Derby, Kan., McFarland is averaging 17.6 points and 9.4 rebounds per game to lead the Buffaloes this season. She ranks fourth in the Big 12 Conference in rebounding and resides among the Top 15 in the league charts in seven other categories including field-goal and free-throw percentage.
One of just three players in the Big 12 with 14 or more double-doubles this season, McFarland is putting her imprint on this season’s record books. She needs just eight points to become the third player in team history to record 500 points and 250 rebounds in one season. Her 14 double-doubles in 2005-06 are the fourth best single-season total in team history and her 19 career doubles rank fourth all-time on the team charts. McFarland’s 141 free throws this year rank fifth on CU’s single season list while her 63 career blocks are ninth on the school’s all-time ledger.
McFarland has scored 20 or more points nine times this year including a personal-best 34 points against Cal State-Fullerton. She has 14 double-digit rebounding games this season, the fifth best total in team history.
McFarland is a two-time member of the Dean’s List and earned the CU Athletic Department’s Academic Excellence Award in the fall of 2004 with a perfect 4.0 GPA. She is also a team representative for the Student Athlete-Advisory Committee. Earlier this month she was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII first team.
