DALLAS ? University of Colorado junior Eric Molnar has been named the Big 12 Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, announced Tuesday by the conference office. The award marks the first time this spring a CU athlete has garnered athlete of the week honors.

Molnar defeated two top 10 nationally-ranked opponents at No. 1 singles, leading the Buffaloes to two victories last week.

Molnar started with a 6-2, 6-3 tally over Northern Colorado’s Vinnie Fallico. Over the weekend, Molnar recorded a win over No. 8 Jerry Makowski of Texas A&M (6-1, 6-1) and followed with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over No. 7 Travis Helgeson of Texas.

CU defeated the Aggies for the first time since 1998.

In doubles play, Molnar teamed with Marko Bundalo to post two wins at the No. 1 position.

Molnar, a junior from Guelph, Ontario, Canada boasts a 4-1 record at No. 1 singles against Big 12 competition this spring and has won five straight matches.

The Buffaloes are No. 28 nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association/Fila poll with a 15-6 record and a 4-1 Big 12 mark.

CU closes out the home portion of their schedule this Friday, April 14 against No. 23 Boise State, and on Sunday, April 16 against No. 63 Denver. Both matches begin at 1 p.m. at the South Boulder Tennis Courts.
