Men?s Tennis Holds On, Upsets No. 23 Boise State, 4-3

BOULDER ? Peter Bjork won his 25th singles match of the season upsetting No. 122 Thomas Schoeck 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles slot helping the University of Colorado men’s tennis team upset No. 23 Boise State, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the South Campus Tennis Courts.
The CU victory was the first over Boise State in men’s tennis since 1993 (nine matches) and improved the Buffaloes record to 16-6. The Broncos drop their second in a row and fall to 17-6.
After falling in the doubles point, the Buffs stormed back to take what seemed to be a commanding 3-1 advantage winning the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles slots.
However, Boise State rallied back to even the match with wins at No.1 and No. 3 setting up Bjork’s clinching victory at No. 2.
“Boise State is a great team and well deserving on their ranking and it took everything from this team to go out and beat them,” said CU head coach Sam Winterbotham. “At the start of the third set, Peter said he doesn’t know if he had any more in him and I said, ?Well, Peter I know you have more in ya. Here’s a Powerbar and go win the set.’””
In doubles, CU could not muster the point, however, at the No. 2 position, Chad Tsuda and Jan Zelezny handed the BSU team of Clancy Shields and Steve Robertson their first loss of the season in 15 matches, 8-1. Shields/Robertson were undefeated at No. 2 winning their previous five.
CU received singles win from Marko Bundalo, who rallied from a set down to defeat Eric Roberson 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4. Bundalo won his 17th match of the year and his fifth match in the last six outings.
Marek Dvorak broke a two-match losing streak at No. 6 defeating Brent Werbeck 6-4, 6-4 for his 22nd match victory; and at No. 5, Tsuda reached the winners’ circle for the 21st time with his fifth straight win defeating Piotr Dilaj 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Bjork’s clinching match was not just a team-best 25 singles victory for the season, Bjork becomes only the seventh CU student-athlete to win that many in a single year.
CU, ranked No. 28 nationally, wrap up the home schedule this Sunday, April 16 at 1 p.m. against No. 63 Denver (12-5).
