ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  ? Carly Newlands recorded a personal best and the fourth-best throw in the shot put in the history of the University of Colorado here on Saturday at the Don Kirby Memorial Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico.

 

Newlands’ throw of 51-00.75 is also the second regionally qualifying mark for her in the shot put and is the best throw by a Buff since 1994. The only other person to record better throws in the shot for CU was Melisa Weis. She owns the top three with marks of 54-06.00, 54-01.25 and 54-00.00. Newlands also took ninth in the discus with a toss of 129-08.

 

James Begley qualified for regional competition in the discus with a personal best mark of 170.03.

 

Andrew Passen took third in the shot put (52-00.50), while Ryan Willis took sixth with a personal record of 50-03.25.

 

The distance team will be in competition tomorrow at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
