Pair of Big 12 Undefeated Tennis Teams Meet Sunday

BOULDER ? Under a picture perfect day of sunshine Sunday afternoon, two of the last three unbeaten Big 12 Conference schools will meet at 1 p.m. at the South Campus Tennis Courts in Boulder with No. 3 Texas taking on No. 28 Colorado.

The Longhorns (15-1, 3-0 Big 12) have won 13-straight matches and are coming off a 7-0 blanking at Nebraska on Friday. Texas also possesses three nationally ranked singles players and one doubles tandem, all in the top-40. In addition, Texas has never lost to Colorado in men’s tennis (12-0) since the two began playing 56 years ago.

Colorado (15-5, 4-0) brings a six-match winning streak into Sunday’s match and looks to improve a school-best nationally ranking of No. 28. On Friday, CU defeated No. 19 Texas A&M for the first time since 1998 (10 matches).

Against the Longhorns, CU will look for the fifth conference match victory on the season, a win total the Buffs have not seen since 1997-98 when they won five Big 12 matches.

Individually, CU has tied a school record with four of its student-athletes having 20 singles wins in a year (Peter Bjork, Marek Dvorak, Eric Molnar and Jan Zelezny). Chad Tsuda and Marko Bundalo are inching closer with 19 and 16 wins, respectively.

The quartet is only the second foursome in CU’s men’s tennis history to win 20 matches in a season. The other came in 1975-76.

On Sunday, the doubles competition begins at 1 p.m., with the singles to follow.
