DALLAS? The University of Colorado track & field program placed two of its former athletes on the Big 12 Track & Field 10th Anniversary Team. Adam Goucher and Sara (Gorton) Slattery were named to the team, as announced by the Big 12 Conference on Wednesday. Both were named to the Big 12 Cross Country 10th Anniversary Team earlier this year.

 

The teams were selected by the league’s head coaches. In order to be eligible for consideration, former athletes must have been a top finisher at the indoor and/or outdoor Big 12 Track & Field Championships. The Big 12 Conference formed in 1996.

 

Goucher earned seven Big 12 Titles and three national titles in the two-year span he competed in the Big 12. Goucher competed the two years prior in the Big Eight Conference. Goucher won the indoor 3k title twice (1997, 98) and once in the outdoor season (1998). He also earned top honors in the 5k in 1997 (outdoor) and 1998 (indoor). His last two titles came in the Distance Medley Relay (indoor, 1997) and the 1,500-meters (outdoor, 1998).

 

In total, Goucher was a 10-time conference champion, won three national titles and was a seven-time All-American. During the 1998 indoor season, he won the 3k national title with a personal, school and collegiate indoor record of 7:46.03, which still stands. In addition, Goucher owns the CU indoor 5k record (13:38.23), which he ran at the Big 12 Championships in 1998.

 

Slattery is an eight-time conference champion. She dominated the 5k, winning during the outdoor season in 2002, 04 and 05.  Slattery also took the 2003 indoor 5k title. In 2001 and 02, she took the indoor titles in the mile run. Slattery also earned the indoor 3k in 2003 and most recently, won the 10k in 2005.

 

The seven-time All-American won two national titles, the outdoor 10k last season and the indoor 5k in 2003. Slattery owns four CU records. On the indoor side, she holds the mile run (4:40.35), the 3k (9:07.16) and the 5k (15:39.25) records. Slattery is also the record holder in the outdoor 5k (15:24.97).

 

Brandon Couts, the assistant coach sprints/hurdles coach at Colorado, was also named to the team for his time at Baylor. The 13-time All-American was a four-time NCAA Champion. Couts holds the Baylor record for the most conference championships with 15 (seven individual and eight relay.)

 

The Buffs will be in Waco, Texas, to participate at the Big 12 Championships at the Hart-Patterson Track & Field Complex on May 12-14.
