Barringer Wins Steeplechase Crown

AUSTIN, Texas ? Jenny Barringer won the 3,000-meter steeplechase on the second day of action at the 2006 NCAA Midwest Region Championship at the Mike A. Myers Stadium on Saturday in Austin, Texas. Barringer, a freshman, finished the steeplechase in 10 minutes and 26.04 seconds to earn her first title as a Buff.
On the men's side, Pete Janson finished fifth overall in the steeplechase with a mark of 8:52.92. Payton Batliner, running in his final race as a Buff, took 10th with a time of 9:15.82.
In the 1500, Stephen Pifer took fourth overall with a time of 3:43.95. Teammate Anthony Chiulli took seventh (3:46.31).
In the final event of the day, the men's 4x400-meter relay team finished 10th. The relay of Nate Terry, Sam Napp, Ryan Campbell and Chris Abuan earned a mark of 3:14.71.
The women tied for 16th overall with 16 points. Texas took first with 93 points. On the men's side, the Buffs came in with 17 points and tied for 14th. Texas also won the men's competition with 91 points.
Barringer, Janson and Pifer automatically qualified for nationals with top-five finishes on Saturday. They join Brent Vaughn and Liza Pasciuto who each took third in the 5k on Friday. Bret Schoolmeester and Christine Bolf each recorded national qualifying times in the 10k earlier in the season.
Colorado will be back in action at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship on June 6-10 in Sacramento, Calif.
