McGlasson Named All-Region - University of Colorado Athletics

BOULDER ? University of Colorado senior Edward McGlasson was named to the PING-Golf Coaches Association of America All-Central Region Team Wednesday, becoming the first Buffalo to make the team twice since the honor’s inception in 2002.

McGlasson, CU’s team captain, also earned the honor as a junior, with this marking the fifth straight year a Colorado golfer has been recognized on the 15-member team. Ben Portie (2002), Stephen Carroll (2003) and Kane Webber (2004) preceded McGlasson in being named to the team from the Central Region (also known as District 5), which is comprised of some 24 schools.

It’s the first requirement for him to earn All-America honors, which will be determined after this week’s NCAA Championship Finals in Sunriver, Ore., which started today.

McGlasson finished the season with a team-best 72.42 stroke average, the third best figure in CU history, trailing only Webber, his one time teammate (71.46 in 2003-04) and the legendary Hale Irwin (72.04 in 1965-66). His career average of 73.54 is also the third best in Buff annals, behind only Webber (72.90) and Scott Petersen (74.37); it was the second best figure for 100-plus rounds other than Webber. His spring stroke average of 71.85 was the second best behind Webber’s 71.30 recorded two years ago. McGlasson played 144 rounds, tied for third most at CU, had 13 top 10 tournament finishes, the sixth most by a Buff, and had 20 top 20 finishes, the seventh most.

His stroke average is the ninth best in the Big 12 Conference, but all things considered, was likely a top four or five figure as CU plays one of the four toughest schedules in the league and had plenty of adverse weather among other distractions in 2005-06. McGlasson finished fourth in the Big 12 Championships and was just the second Buffalo to earn All-Big 12 Team honors and All-Tournament Team accolades in the same season, joining Webber who did it in 2001.

“I’m pleased to have been selected to the all-region team, as it’s such an honor to be in such good company,” McGlasson said. “I feel like I had a very solid senior campaign, and it’s been one of my goals to be selected to this team. Even though our team didn’t accomplish what we set out to do, I am honored to have played well enough for the school to be able to afford this kind of achievement for the fifth straight year.”

McGlasson is on his way to Columbus, Ohio, with teammate, sophomore Jim Grady, where they will attempt to qualify for next month’s U.S. Open. The two are vying for 22 spots available at sectional sites across the country in this year’s Open, set for Winged Foot Golf Club in Scarsdale, June 15-18.

He played in the regional qualifying as an amateur, but if he qualifies, he will play in the U.S. Open as a professional, so he was uncertain as to how he would be listed in the results in Monday’s sectional. He has technically already turned pro, but officially will play in competition for the first time as a non-amateur next week.
