FOR STARTERS: Colorado’s win at home against Iowa State on Wednesday avoided an 0-4 start (2004-05). CU’s 1-3 start to the conference season mirrors the 2000-01, 1999-2000, 1998-99, 1997-98  seasons. Of those four years, Coach Patton teams are 2-0 at home in the fifth Big 12 game and 1-1 on the road.

 

CU at nebraska: Coach Patton teams are 2-8 in Lincoln and 10-12 overall. The Huskers lead the all-time series, 71-67 and hold a dominating 48-13 record against CU at home. Since CU took a Big 12 Tournament win back in 2002 (Kansas City) each team has won four each and three games on their home floor. NU last won in Boulder, Jan. 12, 2005 (68-61) and the Buffs last won at Lincoln on Jan. 14, 2004 (68-60). Last year, NU scored a season-high 93 points on the Buffs, their highest point total in Big 12 play since Jan. 8, 2005 (K-State, 98-95, 2 ots).

 

SCOUTING THE huskers: Nebraska is still looking for its first Big 12 Conference win after falling at Iowa State (71-62) and at Oklahoma (70-53), two common opponents, CU has already played. On the season, NU is a perfect 8-0 at home and have won four of its last six games dating back to Dec. 30. This is the second of three straight games for CU against conference opponents with new head coaches. Doc Sadler brings a 178-63 career coaching record into today’s game.

 

BROADCAST: Tonight’s game will be televised on Altitude Sports & Entertainment and ESPNU. All Colorado men’s basketball regular and post season games are broadcast live on KKZN AM 760, Boulder’s Progressive Talk station. Mark Johnson will handle play-by-play duties and is joined by Charles Johnson with the color commentary.

 

HOOK SHOTS: In his last four games, Xavier Silas is averaging 13.5 points and 4.5 rebounds a game ... Dwight Thorne II made his third straight 3-pointer in as many games after missing his first 17 from the arc. He’s 3-for-24 for the season, 3-for-9 in the Big 12 ... Richard Roby needs nine points to move into 14th place on CU’s all-time scoring list (1,245). If successful today, he’ll pass Scott Wedman (1251) and Blair Wilson (1253) ... Coming off the bench in his last two games, Jermyl Jackson-Wilson is averaging 10.5 points, 4.5 rebounds ... After four Big 12 games, Roby leads the team in scoring 19 ppg., Dominique Coleman is nearly averaging a double-double (11.0 ppg., 8.5 rpg.) ... In Big 12 play, Roby (15), Coleman (14), Silas (13) are a combined 41 turnovers (13.6 a game), the rest of team (five players) have 31 (6.2) ... Roby has led CU in scoring eight times (one shared); all are over 20 points with the exception of two games (at UNCW, 16 pts.; ISU, 15 pts.). TEAM: CU is 1-8 on the season after trailing at the half and 4-0 when leading at the 10, 5, 2 minutes marks of the game ... After four Big 12 games, the opposition starters have outscored CU 271-to-198, that’s 67.8-to-49.5 ... CU has allowed seven double-doubles by the opponent this year and nine players to score 20 or more points ... CU has used nine different starting combos through 14 games.

 

LAST TIME OUT (complete box on page 19): Freshman forward Xavier Silas scored all 19 of his points in the second half, sparking Colorado to a 74-65 victory over Iowa State, Wednesday night.     Wesley Johnson and Jiri Hubalek each scored 15 points for the Cyclones (11-7, 2-2), who showed some hangover from their overtime loss to No. 6 Kansas on Saturday, falling behind 20-8 when Roby scored eight points in the first 12 minutes. Silas scored 11 straight points, on a trio of 3-pointers and a layup down the baseline, to help the Buffaloes regain their lead at 47-41 in the opening minutes of the second half, and Colorado never trailed again. Silas’ 3-pointer with 6:47 left gave the Buffs a 58-52 lead that they extended to 63-52 on Jermyl Jackson-Wilson’s three points and a bucket by Dominique Coleman (nine points, seven rebounds, four assists, four steals).

 

ON THE ROAD IN THE BIG 12: Since the Big 12 formed (1996-97), CU has played 81 regular season games on the road. Heading into 2006-07, the Buffaloes under Coach Patton are 21-60 (.260). That means an average of 2.1 wins a season and 5.9 losses in eight road games. The highest win total was 4-4 in 1996-97; their lowest was one win in each of the 2002-03 (Baylor), 2001-02 (Texas A&M) and 1999-2000  Kansas State) seasons.

 

ON THE ROAD...Part II BITS: Dating back to last season, CU has lost six straight Big 12 road games ... In those six games, CU is averaging 63.6 ppg. compared to 79.2 by their opponents ... Since CU was in Lincoln last year (Feb. 22), the Buffaloes have played five road and two neutral court games, CU is being outscored 76.4-to-58.0 and shooting .353 from the field (143-for-405) ...

 

TOP-10 SHOOTER: Richard Roby is nearing the school’s top-10 field goals attempts list. Entering tonight’s game, Roby has 1,020 attempts nearing the 10th spot held by Jay Humphries (1980-84) with 1,058. As for field goals made, Roby is a bit behind Scott Wedman’s 10th place of 516. Roby has 428 field goals made.

 

“X” Marks The Spot: For the second time this season, Xavier Silas led the Buffs in scoring with 19 points (all in the second half) in the home win over Iowa State. Silas, one of eight freshmen is averaging 10.8 ppg. (third on team) and 3.9 rpg. He’s averaging 29.2 minutes a game (leads all freshmen) and has started the last eight games in a row. Silas’ other season high in points was 19 points against Pepperdine (Dec. 4) and seven rebounds against Central Florida (Jan. 3). He also scored 17 points against Texas (Jan. 6) and a team-high 14 at New Mexico (Nov. 14).

 

SIXTH PLACE! The University of Colorado stands sixth in the NACDA Director’s Division I Cup Standings, which were tabulated within the last week to include all fall sport competitions.

   The Buffaloes, on the strength of the national title in men’s cross country with a second place finish in the sport by the CU women, earned 304 points to rank sixth overall for the fall, which was also tops by all Big 12 Conference schools. The cross country win was worth 100 points, with the runner-up effort netting 90.

   The women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16, which earned 64 points, while the women’s volleyball team scored 50 for advancing to the second round.

   California leads with 364.5 points, earning points in six sports including 100 for the men’s water polo crown. Stanford (334), Duke (316), UCLA (309) and Wisconsin (309) round out the top five.

   After Colorado, Texas was the next Big 12 school on the list, coming in 11th with 269 points. Oklahoma State (28th, 155 points), Oklahoma (34th, 130), Nebraska (37th, 125), Texas Tech (46th, 117), Texas A& M (58th, 98), Missouri (69th, 75), Iowa State (91st, 50), Kansas 122nd, 34), Kansas State (124th, 25) and Baylor (173rd, 16) complete the conference fall standings.

   Locally after the Buffaloes, Colorado State ranked 90th with 51 points and Denver 91st with 50. Air Force did not score any fall points.

BUFF BITS: CU has five double-doubles this season: Jermyl Jackson-Wilson (2), Dominique Coleman (2), Richard Roby (1) ... Roby has led the team in scoring eight times, including one shared and has scored double figures in 13 of 14 games ... Coleman recorded his second career double-double scoring a team-high 17 points and career-best 13 rebounds against Texas A&M.
