BOULDER ?The University of Colorado Volleyball season celebrated its success in 2006 with its senior banquet on Thursday, Jan. 18. Colorado finished the season with a 17-12 overall record and was 12-8 in the Big 12. The Buffs tied for fourth with Iowa State in the league standings.

 

The Buffs ended the season ranked 24th in the CSTV/AVCA Division I Coaches Poll. They were also ranked 23rd on the RichKern.com poll and were 19th in the Pablo rankings. Colorado recorded three wins against top-25 teams in 2006. The Buffs defeated No. 17 Missouri to start the Big 12 season and dropped No. 19 New Mexico State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

 

The biggest win of the season was CU’s first-ever win over a top-ranked opponent when CU defeated Nebraska for the first time since 1997. It was also the first time CU took a game off the Huskers since 1997. Nebraska went on to win the national title; its only loss was against the Buffs.

 

CU ended the season with a RPI of 22. The Buffs played a non-conference schedule RPI of 16 and the Big 12 Conference had a total RPI of three. The Pacific-10 finished with the top RPI and the Big 10 was second.

 

Ashley Nu’u was named CU’s first AVCA All-American and was recently named an honorable mention selection to the Asics/Volleyball Magazine All-America team. Nu’u is currently training with the U.S. National Team in Colorado Springs.

 

As the Buffs look ahead to the 2007 season, they received some good news. Mallori Gibson was granted a medical hardship for the 2005 season. Gibson was limited to just eight games in her first season as a Buff. She collected just six kills, three digs and two blocks while hitting -.071. This past season, she played in all 29 matches (103 games), including 19 starts, and recorded 351 kills, 34 aces, 113 digs, 30 blocks and hit .178.

 

2007 recruit, Kristin ?Rosie” Steinhaus, enrolled at CU for the 2007 spring semester. With the early enrollment, she will be able to participate in spring drills, which will help ease her into life as a student-athlete. Steinhaus is ranked 86th of all recruits for the class of 2007 by Prepvolleyball.com.

 

The Buffs will start their 2007 schedule in a tournament at Tulane University on August 24-25. They will return home to host the Colorado Invitational; hosting California, Central Florida and UNC-Wilmington Aug. 30-Sept. 1.
