Just finish!! Be someone who others can count on to finish the work, complete the task, and see things through.  Many times the outcome is not what we want and sometimes outside our control.  But you can always control your mindset, your effort, your will.

It was senior day, a chance at a bowl, avoiding a losing season, and Nebraska.  It was also the last regular season game: FINISH.

There are several ways I judge a season.  Start Fast and Finish Strong are a couple of the principles we live by.  School, games, practice, drills, life.  When it’s time to go- go fast, go hard.  Regardless of what happens- FINISH!!  The fact that we won our opener and the last game- makes me proud that our guys are learning important lessons about success on and off the field.

Being in the zone happens when we have strong fundamental values and beliefs to anchor our thoughts and actions.  WE control all of that.  Quit looking at the score, the clock, the paycheck- push forth your values and you will maximize your performance, enjoy the experience, and ultimately- yes you will SUCCEED!

"When you do something, you should burn yourself completely,
like a good bonfire, leaving no trace of yourself."
-Shunryu Suzuki

I met with Jerry Lynch (http://www.wayofchampions.com) in Boulder last year.  He has worked with a ton of successful people and athletes. He and I share many of the same beliefs about optimal performance.  He sent along some great thanksgiving words about the hero’s journey to the extraordinary:

Enjoy the process. Be in the moment. Control what you can. Demonstrate integrity. Do the right thing. Ask, “What can I give?” Think “outside the box.” Bring passion, fire, energy. Seek extraordinary in each day. Affirm self and others.

I totally agree, again easier said than done.  But when you get there, it’s a beautiful thing!

It is Thanksgiving and we all have much to be thankful for. Scott Sharp Armstrong (www.bouldercoachingacademy.com) has been a very powerful and positive influence in our program- helping our guys to set goals, visualize success, vocalize affirmations, and develop a healthy attitude of gratitude.  All great traits of champions that all of us control and can develop, regardless of the obstacle.

We have no idea what the future bowl possibilities may be.  Do we deserve it?  You bet, we’ve played a great schedule and beat some good teams.  For our seniors, our program, and our fans it would be great, and we will represent.  That decision is largely out of our hands, we do not control it.  But no matter what the scenario we will continue to build a solid program.

AND BY THE WAY: THANKS FOR FILLLING THE STADIUM WITH BLACK AND GOLD ON SUCH A CHILLY DAY?YOU WERE GREAT!

I am very proud of this year’s squad; these guys have overcome many obstacles.  All along they continue to buy in, believe, persevere, improve and develop.  That’s all any coach can ask, they are a special group of young men!

The Invitation

Oriah Mountain Dreamer

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living.  I want to know what you ache for, and if you dream of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are.  I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon, I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life’s betrayals or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain, I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic, to remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me is true, I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself; If you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul:  if you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see beauty, even when it’s not pretty, every day, and if you can source your own life from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure, yours, and mine, and still stand on the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, “Yes!”

It doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have.  I want to know if you can get up, after the night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done to feed the children,

It doesn’t interest me who you know or how you came to be here, I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied; I want to know what sustains you, from the inside, when all else fall away.

I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.

OK- Music?  Another guitar soloist- Andy McKee... he can pick those strings... good stuff.

Movie? Let’s go with Second Hand Lions... a great story on several levels.

Book? A bunch of coaches have read this book, but “A Season of Life” by Jeffrey Marx.  A good read about what sports and parenting should be about.

PEACE!
