BOULDER ? University of Colorado senior Veera Nurmi was named the 2007 National Female Player of The Year in her home country of Finland by the Board of The Finnish Tennis Association.

Nurmi, a senior on the womenGÇÖs tennis team won national championships in both singles and doubles this past summer at the Finnish National Outdoor Championships in Helsinki.

The Tennis Awards Gala was held in Helsinki on Nov. 24.

Nurmi is a three-year letterwinner and ranks 19th all-time on ColoradoGÇÖs all-time singles victories list with 57.

GÇ£Being a college athlete, especially an international one, and receiving an award in my native country means a lot,GÇ¥ Nurmi said. GÇ£It is important to still be remembered and honored in a place where I grew up and played most of my life.GÇ¥

Nurmi said when she travels home, she usually has the opportunity to play in a couple of tournaments.

GÇ£Playing college tennis is a lot different than playing individual tournaments in Finland,GÇ¥ Nurmi said. GÇ£It has been a pleasure for me to experience both, and it has also taught me a lot to play college tennis as a team. Also being a part of University of Colorado and its athletic department as well as its academic programs has been a great experience, and means a lot to me.GÇ¥

Majoring in geography with a minor in Scandinavian studies, Nurmi is a four-time Commissioners Honor Roll recipient, named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) scholar-athlete for the 2006 season (equivalent to being named an All-American), in addition to being named to the 2006-07 All-Big 12 All-Academic first-team.

The CU tennis team opens the spring season Jan. 19 at New Mexico.
